Would you like to do something real for the victims of Hurricane Katrina? The Red Cross needs you to answer the phones!
My mother is currently in Washington DC volunteering with the Red Cross. She wanted to be sent to the really badly affected areas as she is a social worker and grief counselor, but they needed her more at the call center in DC .
My mum tells me that the number of calls they are receiving is immense and people are waiting on hold for hours at a time. Since she is a mental health professional, she is working on the mental health team, taking calls from people who are uber angry, irrational and suicidal.
But they need anyone and everyone to help answer all the regular phone calls...victims needing assistance with finding food, clothes etc.
My mum told me that when she got to the call center yesterday AM at 6:30, there were 331 people on hold and 150 something people working the phones. When she left at 4:30PM, there were 338 people on hold.
I've heard a lot of people say, "I want to help" but don't know if they have the skills...answering the phones is something that just about anyone can do.
You need to go through their disaster training, and you need to be able to commmit at least 10 days of your time. They pay your airfare, hotel, and food, and then give you an allowance for each day.
End PSA.

I wouldn't go back to hotline work if my dick was in a vice and the only people calling were people who knew how to get my dick out of the vice.

Personally I'd rather spend my time helping the victims of the Pakistani earthquake. The US is big enough, and indeed rich enough to take care of itself. Pakistan is not.

Hmm, they have enough money to make nuclear weapons though.
