Because I don't think you would be considered intellectual at all when you demand that Canada sent troops to Vietnam when they didn't.

But I'm surprised by Paul Krugman too. He must have had his friends and family vote over and over again.

Noam is a smart guy, but no way is he the top intellectual in the world.

Habermas should be higher up. Where are the jurists? John Paul Stevens, Michael Kirby, Shigeru Oda (if he's still alive?).

And it would be madness not to include some business leaders too:

Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, Lou Gerstner are, like it or not, intellectuals in their own right.

And we're probably missing a whole bunch of academics. The guys who developed the Black-Scholes option pricing model come to mind. Probably a few dozen in the scientific fields who I've never heard of.

Who the hell brought up Ann Coulter? This is about intellectuals, not skanks.

Yeah but most of the time he is bitching about stuff no one else has the balls to bitch about. And he does it intelligently.

But doesn't mean he's the world's top intellectual.

My linguistics class has given me a lot of respect for Mr. Chomsky. His approach to language and cognitive science is probably the most interesting thing I've studied so far.

I just saw Paul Krugman a couple days ago giving a speech at my school. All he did was bash the government for high health care costs.

That's actually somewhat intellectual.

Chomsky Number 1... not sure if that seems right... but goddamn he makes me feel sane and proud to be a free thinking human being.

If Ann Coulter is an "intellectual", then so is Geraldo Rivera.

Well we are all free thinking human beings. And I am proud of my certain free thinking views despite Noam Chomsky.

Judging by the fact that number 1 and number 5 disagree on just about everything, and then looking at the definition of intelligence, I think the majority of people should be able to call bull shit on this entire poll. Intelligence is esentially making a rational and sound decision. How is it that two of the smartest people in the world never agree yet are rational and sound in their opinions?

Then so is Noam Chomsky. Why does the ability to speak well make anybody an intellectual?

Chomsky is a thinker in the traditional sense. He's learned, and a pioneer in his primary field (linguistics), and spends some time talking politics. Take the politics out, and he's still an intellectual.

If you'd given me this poll a year ago I'd have had an easy number one. :(

Funny you should mention that; he made the list of people who didn't make the list but should have.
