This is probably not the right forum for this, but GD sucks and I've always thought of N&D as a sort of history forum.

Today my girlfriend's mom brought home some stuff that her father (a WWII pilot) had given her. Among the items was an "orientation" packet given to the troops during basic training (with his notes from the time), his flight journal, and best of all, a classified document given to all pilots to familiarize themselves with the naval vessels of both the Axis and Allies. The last document is incredibly neat, because it gives complete overviews of the most important vessels of the war, and because I should have never seen it. I love WWII, and getting to hold and examine real documents was a thrill.

What items from history have you gotten your hands on?

I once found my granddad's school notebook from the mid-thirties laying around his spare room. It was interesting to see the lingo schoolkids used back then (the Little Rascals is actually a pretty accurate depiction, arrarently). It really reminded me of the classroom scenes from A Christmas Story.

My family has always had a thing for gadgets, going back generations, so we also have many more photos from the 40s, 50s, and 60s than I'd assume most people have.

How could you tell they were actually from the wall?

They could have been spray painted rocks, but I bought them at Checkpoint Charlie.

B, do you realize that you may own something upon which David Hasselhoff stood and shouted "Freedom!!" while his jacket blinked brightly in the night?

If I had the money, I would probably pay several thousand dollars for select items of war memorobilia, especially Nazi or Imperial Japanese stuff. An officer's katana or an SS Dagger would be amazing.

my husband has a wooden box from one of his relatives from the civil war. it is their mess kit/grooming kit and it is gorgeous.

it is about 18"x4"x4" and it has a lovely intricate inlaid wodden pattern on the top. when you open it, it has a large mirror and the a pull out shelf. it is all lined with some sort of fuzzy red fabric.

in it is:

a wooden fork and spoon
a handwritten Rx for worms
some pictures
a ton of buttons and medals

it is way cool.
