Suspects in homeless beatings surrender Florida teens will face murder charges

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (AP) -- Two South Florida teens suspected in the beatings of three homeless men turned themselves in to police Sunday, authorities said.
Family attorneys negotiated the surrender of Brian Hooks, 18, and Thomas S. Daugherty, 17.
They will face murder charges in the death of Norris Gaynor and aggravated battery charges in Thursday's videotaped beating of Jacques Pierre, said Capt. Michael Gregory of the Fort Lauderdale police.
They also are suspects in the beating of a third man, Raymond Perez, 49, whose case remains under investigation, Gregory said. (Watch one beating caught on surveillance camera -- 2:07)
The teens were in police custody pending official charges from a grand jury, Gregory said.
Police also were investigating whether the two may have been involved in other beatings and if they had accomplices.
"We do know there have been other assaults of homeless in Fort Lauderdale," Gregory said.
Names of the teens' attorneys were not immediately available.
Pierre, 58, was beaten on the Fort Lauderdale campus of Florida Atlantic University.
Gaynor, 45, was killed a few blocks away, and Perez, 49, was beaten in a Church-by-the-Sea garden.
It was not clear if Perez and Pierre remained hospitalized Sunday.

Meh, if the homeless men had shown a little more initiative earlier in life, they wouldn't have been on the street anyhow.

i was in the shitty part of baltimore gettin gas..i had no choice..i was almost on e and i found this spot..i had like 5 bucks (yeah..when you actually could get a decent amount of gas for 5 bucks!!) in my hand and about 100 in a bag in my car..i was on my way to annapolis and i figured id fill a little in to hold me over till i get there..
so im pumpin and this bum asked me for money..i was like sorry i need the 5 to get me to dc..plus i prepaid (and there was no way i was going into my bag!!)..so he walked away..and some punk ass kid came up to him and asked if he got the cash..he said no and the kid beat the shit outta him..felt bad for the guy, but i was no way gettin involved..i could have tore the kid up, but he may have had a gun/homies..it got to the point at the end of the fill where the gas comes out slowly so you dont go over..i was like fuck this, put the thing on the handle and took off

Heh. Maybe you think people who are in favor of poor people taking some responsibility for thier position instead of placing full blame on the government automatically believe that homeless people are below society and deserve to be the victims of random acts of violence?

I don't believe the government is to blame for ANYONE being poor. I also don't think that's an excuse for taking no action to end poverty.

Then we are in perfect agreement. Maybe your comment above was not actually indirectly meant for anyone on this board, but I took it to be pointing at me because of the stances I have taken on poverty. And I want you to know that I do not believe in random violence, I think what these kids did is abominable, and it is possible for those views to be harmonius with my views on poverty and the homeless.
