I owed money for 3 years before I went to work and changed my withholdings. Now I get money! Though, not nearly as much as meatwad.

I'm really baffled that the goverment determines all the taxes rates, etc but then hold US responsible for determining whether or not we've paid the right amount and penalizes us if we can't figure it out properly. Truly amazing.
You don't get money back. Nor do you really pay any extra. The amount you pay is set in stone according to your income. If you pay extra over a given period of a year, you are just getting money back that's yours anyway. And if you pay at the end, they're just getting what they would have gotten anyway. It all comes out in the wash, and your net income at the end of the year is the same regardless.
One thing is for sure. There needs to be tax revision.

According to what you get paid, you give a certain amount in taxes. According to how you filled out your paperwork at work, your employer takes out some money for taxes. At the end of the year, if they took out too much, you get money back, if they took out too little, you owe money.
... And of course there's deductions, but you don't sound like you itemize very many deductions.

I've never understood this either. And yes, things needs to be changed a lot.

Not that the IRS doesn't suck but come on is a W4 really that difficult to figure out? If you claim 6 deductions and you're a single guy with no kids you have to know you're going to underpay.

No, a W4 is quite easy to figure out.
Why is it that I have to then go back and spend lots of time and energy to determine whether or not they deducted what I told them to? Anyone here ever done their 1040 and found yourself to be dead even?
