The reason why it won't work is twofold: 1. the actual amount of money that would need to be printed to make a difference is substantial. We're talking about hundreds of billions of dollars. 2. The expectations it creates (that a gov't is prepared to repay debt in this way) will in and of itself drive inflation up. Expectations are arguably the most significant driver of inflation. Even more so than underlying increases in costs or demand.

It's a cultural issue. We stopped being producers and became consumers in our 'live for today' mindset. Why save when I can have the whole 3rd season of Just Shoot Me on DVD?

But what if they don't tell any one they print it. Just slowly leak it into the system by taking cabs and paying for groceries in cash. Just don't tell our creditors.
