The Cruel Seal Hunt Has Begun
Canada's annual seal hunt, the largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet, began at dawn on Saturday. Even as you read this, fishermen are clubbing baby seals in the North Atlantic, just to earn a few extra bucks by selling seal skins. Last year, 98.5% of the seals killed were two months of age or younger—and veterinary reports indicate that many seals have been skinned while still conscious and able to feel pain. Our ProtectSeals team is now in Canada, braving the frigid waters to document the hunt and show the world why this unconscionable cruelty must be stopped.

I know some of you will laugh at this, or say how cows are slaughtered every day etc etc.
Just watch some videos of the link and get back to me.
This cruel death to these babies for their skin, not for food.

Why is it so much worse killing seals than, say, cows?
I really don't see the problem. It's not like they're an endangered species or anything... Actually it's the complete opposite. If people DON'T kill seal, they'll be so many that they will eventually make other species endagered by eating them.
OK, baby seals are cuter than cows, but does that make it worse to kill them?

It's not what is being done, it's how it is being done. Baby seals are clubbed on the head, usually several times. Sometimes they don't even die immediately, and they are left to suffocate and die slowly with their heads squashed and imploded. That's NOT how cows are killed.

First of all, I respect your opinion and I dont intend on changing it. What disgusts me is the purpose of it and HOW it's being done, they are not being killed in a humane way. Is the fact that they are not an endagered species make it any more justifiable?
Many of these seals are being skinned while they are still concious.

Okay, clubbing them to death might seem brutal, but I believe that if you're using a hakapick and strike the seal in the head it will die pretty fast. It'll at least be unconcious when the first stroke hits, so one can discuss whether or not this method of killing is inhumane. When people are out hunting elk or moose or whatever you call it in your country, it happens quite ofte that the Elk doesn't die immediately. Why doesn't anyone protest against this?
They have to keep it quiet, or else they'll scare the other seals. What other way to do that than beat them to death?

I think the merit of whether or not it is wrong to kill an animal should be based on deliciousness. Do Seals taste better than Cows? If so, kill em and send some my way. Perhaps they have good marbling with all that blubber they have going on.

Does someone actually eat them? Or do people just club them for the pelt. I always thought that was why they were clubbed and not shot; so as not to ruin the beautiful, soft furry pelt. Every rich bitch needs a nice soft coat or stole after all.

Exactly.
Leave it to the vegetarian to justify why it is that the seals should be clubbed and not shot.

The Inuit use the lot. These hunters just get the pelt and leave the rest. Guns aren't used because it damages the pelt.

The Inuit are not involved in the seal hunt... it takes place in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and eastern Newfoundland - Inuits do not live there.

Right. He was just saying that unlike the Inuit, these hunters don't use the whole seal.

Meh, doesn't change a thing for me.
I'm not really saying let's not kill them. I'm saying, if you're gonna kill them, might as well use the whole lot. Learn a few things from the Inuit.
To club animals to death to satisfy a fashion statement... yes, the act is inhumane, but it's also indulgent, wasteful, and just plain stupid.
Exactly, to whoever posted the kfc bucket, and the people who keep saying "what about the cows?", you must realize the difference. They are not killed humanely, please visit http://www.hsus.org/ and watch some of the videos. If you still feel its not wasteful, stupid and inhumane, tell me why.
