Posner is probably the single most influential jurist of his generation. I probably read more opinions by Posner in law school than any other person, including Supreme Court Justices. He's a very, very smart man, with a keen legal mind, and a very cold outlook on the world.

I might go as far to say that he's the smartest person I've ever read anything from. It's also ridiculous how many books he writes in addition to his legal work.

Posner makes me feel conflicted and a little dirty. even though i don't necessarily agree with his world view (although i don't know enough about it to have a definite opinion) and frequently disagree with the end result of the opinions he authors, he's just so smart and convincing and good that it's hard to argue with where he ends up.
i have similar feelings about Alex Kozinski, though i think his courtroom demeanor, personality and relatively high-profile (for a judge) public persona takes something away from his legal brilliance.
on a side note, i've found myself sharing an elevator with Kozinski on a few occasions during the past 9 months, and these have been some of the most uncomfortable experiences in recent memory...

That's the one I'm reading right now. The next one that I really want to read after that is Sex and Reason.

Lots of interesting threads today. Posner has also written a book on the financial crisis:
A Failure of Capitalism: The Crisis of '08 and the Descent into Depression
It's a very entertaining read and does a pretty good job of explaining the current financial crisis, without all the economic goobledygook. The problem is that without a more rigorous treatment of the economics the language is so vague as to be almost meaningless at times. Also, the whole book is suffused with his opinions. If you've already read a lot about the current situation, it's fun to listen to his opinions.
He has a blog with fellow U of C professor Gary Becker, in which he seems to discuss virtually everything that comes into his mind.
