One of my employees is getting divorced from his wife. Her grounds for divorce is spousal abuse. The shitty thing is he never laid a hand on her, and their not splitting up. It's all a made up story so that she can go on welfare and get a HUD loan for a house. They have shitty credit and can't get a loan any other way. He's not a bad guy, but he has no problem working the system. What do you guys think?

Sort of.
A HUD loan is a regular loan with a bank, except that it generally has a lower rate than the person would normally be able to obtain because the loan is secured by the government. If a person defaults on a HUD loan, yes, the taxpayers foot the bill.

I'm not sure how it all works. His claim is that he's getting his tax dollars back. The problem with that is he has 4 kids. He gets earned income credit. The money he gets back at the end of the year is about $1000.00 more than he pays in. That includes Social Security and Medicade tax. He pays 0 taxes.

id bust him depending on how good a friend he is
He's a pretty good friend. I've known him for 6 years. I'm probably not going to do anything. It's just a bit irritating.
i take it between them, they make enough to put food on the table?
hes doing that with the house plus this, id turn his ass in, but give him a chance to put a stop to it. if he gets divorced and its judged in her favor for spousal abuse, it will be in your paper (least it is here) and all is friends and family can see hes a wife beater

What a dick! He's obviously not the "good person" you think he is.

Isn't a HUD load the same as an FHA loan? My first mortgage was an FHA loan and I was married. How does being divorced make it easier to get the loan?
It is similar. I don't know the exact difference either.
But being a single mother may be a factor in getting a loan. Just because you were married and got an FHA loan doesn't mean that you couldn't have gottena better deal if you were single with kids.

He's just very simple. He's a loyal friend that would do anything in is power to help a friend. He's just not that smart.
Even if this guy gets away with it. There are consequences that none of us are seeing that are going to make him regret this.
