Children killed by falling TVs
April 30, 2006, 4:11 AM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) _ Three New York City children have been fatally injured in the past two months by televisions that fell off of stands or furniture _ a rare type of accident that usually occurs only a few times a year nationwide.

The latest death came Wednesday, when a 27-inch set resting on a rolling stand toppled on top of a 4-year-old Brooklyn girl, police said.

A 3-year-old Brooklyn boy was killed in a similar incident on April 7, possibly as he was trying to reach a VCR perched on top of the television.

A two-year-old was killed in March by a 37-inch television that fell off a dresser.

The deaths have prompted a plea by some grieving mothers for new laws that would mandate warning labels about the potential danger of top-heavy or poorly placed TVs.

"If there were warning labels, or if there was any awareness that this could be a danger, believe me, the kind of mother I am, I wouldn't have even let my son have a TV in his room," Michele DeMeo-Bonsangue told the New York Post.

Her 8-year-old son was killed in 2005 while playing a video game on a 19-inch television.

The National Consumer Product Safety Commission said about six children are killed by falling televisions in the United States every year.

I think we seriously need to consider IQ testing potential parents now.

Come the fuck on. Who doesn't know that putting a heavy anything on a small crappy table is a bad idea!??!

My TV does have a warning label on it. It weighs 198lbs, so you would expect it.

But i completely agree on the IQ testing for parents.

I'd be shocked if the television owners manual didn't already contain this warning.

For children under 5, use a pea-sized amount...

Come on. I think they should purposly leave warning labels off of things so that the stupid people do get hurt.

I mean, don't put shampoo in your eyes? Of fucking course not. Would you want sodium-laurate burning your retinas? Nope...

Stupid people piss me off...

But HALF, it's the company's JOB to tell me that heavy things can fall! It's not MY job to know it already...that's what we PAY them for.
