It just ended. Bush introduced a five point plan to fix immigration. Any responses from people. The major problem I take with it is the card that youd have to carry around to have a job, but I might have misunderstood him.

You have a problem with workers needing to have ID to prove who they are?

On another note, I agree with everything the man said. Cheers.

West coast time rocks. I don't have to miss my favorite TV shows to listen to Da Prez.

No. What I don't understand is, who would get these " tamperproof IDs"? Just the temporary workers? Anyone who wants to work in the country? Only non-citizens who wants to work here? I don't quite get it. But it's probably not a big deal.

I understood it as a new card that would be used for any and all guest workers of any type. A new "green card". But it wasn't made abundantly clear, I'm sure it will be later.

There any transcripts out? I'd rather read than watch.

Hello. My name is Mr. Bush. My opinion polls really suck because Democrats hate me and I've alienated my base trying to gain back support from the people who hate me. I got this plan that's never gonna have an impact on anything, and I'm in bed with big business, so I really can't do anything. But, what I'm really trying to say is, this.

If you're hispanic, you should vote red for me because I'm helping you out! And if you're liberal, you should vote red because this is an amnesty program. And if you're conservative, you should vote red because I'm putting soldiers on the border and I'm gonna crack down on immigration.

Okay...

That was good. You forgot to use the phrase, "in other words", you have to break it down for us common folk.

In other words, I'm whoring out myself so my party doesn't lose the house and the Senate.

What do you say to that "Dirty" Harry Reid? Go ahead Hillary, take a position on this issue, it will only hurt you in '08. Same for you Mrs. Pelosi.

Remember what I said last week about the Republicans needing to force the Democrats into solid positions? Well, at least they're doing it. Democrats have now been forced to go on the record on immigration, tax cuts, and to a lesser extent the prescription drug program. Now that they are on the record...

I thought each of his 5 measures was pretty logical and reasonably enforceable. What are your ideas?

I've been over what I think. You know what I think of Amnesty. As for the rest of it, it does seem logical and reasonably enforceable. But then again, what we already have in place also seems logical and enforceable. Particularly if you travel back in time a bit. Bush hasn't done shit about this for six years now. Conservatives have been begging Bush to do something about it for a long time, and he's ignored it, and now watered it all down. Bush, and the combination of congress, give me little reason to think anything will change.

But hey, ya know, you walk into the bathroom, and shit! The tub is over flowing! The first thing you do is shut the water off. If Bush can shut the water off, I'll put a little more faith in him on this issue.

I don't remember, anyway.

Hahhaa..

I'm with you 100%. There ARE things you and I agree on, this is one of them

There was a story on Guest Worker programs on NPR today. It appears that Idaho has farmers that utilize it, but they didn't cite anywhere else. One of the complaints was a long waiting period and having to deal with so many government agencies, as well as having to pay the workers a bit more. If we are going to seriously crack down on employers, we definitely need to expand and streamline this program, which seems like a no brainer solution to me.

F**k. Even France understands that allowing millions of unskilled workers into your nation will destroy it. WTF Bush? You gonna let France out smart you?

Dammit. Bush's speech was really stupid. No matter what he says about a guest worker program, it's amnesty. I've already stated my opinion on the whole immigration thing in the other immigration threads, but Bush and all of our elected officials have sold us out to Mexico.

Plus, sending 6000 troops to the border won't do anything. I was listening to Captain Dale Dye, a military expert on KFI in LA, and he said that that figure includes support troops (medics, kitchen duty, etc.) so that you take a few thousand out of that number, and then let's say that you have three shifts of troops patrolling, 1000+ per 8 hour shift-- 6000 total troops won't do shit. You need at least 10000.

The only true, definitive solution lies in the hands of the Mexican government-- they have one of the world's largest supplies of oil, tons of natural resources, and two beautiful coastlines. There is NO reason why Mexico shouldn't be as successful as Canada. It's just that the Mexican government is too lazy and corrupt to ever do anything. What a shame. And just us Californians alone have to pay 10 billion a year because of that.
