At the same time, life expectancy has gone up, and deaths from the three leading killers of Americans have dropped. I'm of the mindset that "I'll take it when I need it" when it comes to prescription drugs. I feel that a lot of medications are overprescribed or mis-prescribed. Do you think that the decreases mentioned in the story are a direct result of more Americans taking scrips?

I think medications for ADD are heavily overprescribed/misperscribed, especially for youth. It seems that any kid that can't pay attention is slapped with the ADD/ADHD label, and prescribed drugs for it. From my experience, most kids have a deficit of attention, and it's not something that needs drugs to fix.

I agree. I think that the statistic on the number of older people that take prescription drugs is more a factor in the increased life expectancy. There's also stuff like birth control pills, allergy medication, or hell, even prescription vitamins that add a lot to these statistics.

It could also be the result of 1) better technology or 2) less people are engaging in the behavior that leads to death. But I do think that the prescription meds contributed significantly to the decline in deaths.
Many drugs, such as Ritalin, are overly prescribed. Also, drugs for depression have become more common in either aiding or replacing older methods, such as cognitive therapy.
and keep in mind that Viagra is a prescribed medication, so that and similar non-life-and-death drugs probably contributed to the high percentage.
But as you said, if you need it, take it.

Too many people are of the belief that a pill will fix their problems. Orthodox medicines - as great as they may be - treat the symptoms, not the causes. Unfortunately too many are seeking a 'quick fix', instead of looking at the root of the problem. ADD / ADHD? How about paying a little more attention to the amount of preservatives in food consumed by children...

There was a graphic that I saw on CNN the other night that showed of all of the industrialized countries, The US spends (by far) more money per capita on prescription drugs, but we have the shortest life span.

I added that it was the teacher who needed an attitude adjustment, not my child! It was an interesting meeting...LMAO!

prescribed drukz for depression and such can work but i think they are over prescribed, happyness is found by overcoming barriers in your mind, not by taking a pill and not feeling bad about 'it'. offcourse there are ppl with chemical inbalances etc that need some anti depression medicine, but i've met some ppl who plainly saw taking it more as an addiction than a cure..
ritalin and such could have negative long term effects for children so i dont see why doctors often rescribe them so easily.
im happy tho that modern medicine can tackle quite a large number of things.

A guy I know was prescribed prozak and he was not even close to being the same person he was. Far away look in the eyes, seemed distant when you talked with him, slowed right down. I guess when all his friends disappeared he got the message that we were right and a big source of venting because he sure scrapped the drugs and became himself again in a hurry. Any changes? Yea, he will never do that again.

I agree...my ex's mother was all for ritalin...she even had books for kids called 'shelly the hyperactive turtle' and explained how he couldn't sit still and all this and he NEEDED ritalin...pretty shaemful, I always thought 'isn't this how kids are supposed to be!?'

Anti-depressants and ADD/ADHD drugs are WAY overprescribed. I think the decline in those numbers comes from a combination of things like people living healthier lifestyles, technology and medications.

whats up with all the pill hatez?I was a depressed dude.I'm not saying that prozac cured me 100 percent.But I take one every morning and feel more upbeat about this shity world!
