Obviously the mint has not learned the most important lesson, which is that for a dollar coin to be fully successful, you have to eliminate the dollar bill. :?

No way! Clearly they just need to find the right face to put on the coin!

Jesus, do they really think anyone gives a flying fuck who is on the coin?

heh... I thought this whole discussion sounded familiar. Here's what I had to write about coin currency and strippers in the earlier thread here: http://forums.theskyiscrape.com/vie ... sc&start=0

From my point of view here in Canada I would rather have our $1 and $2 bills back. The coins are a royal pain in the ass. Nothing fills up your pockets faster than heading to the corner store with a $20 to buy some milk. I don't have a convenient way to carry change around, so as soon as I get a chance I ditch it in one of two collecting areas I've got for change, my car and a jar at home. There it sits until eventually there's no more room for change and I have to do something about it. This happened just the other day and after sorting it all out for an hour I ended up with $400 some odd dollars in fucking change!! Great, off to the bank with it so that it's actually useful again.

As for the stripper debate. Well here in Canada strippers tear right down to nothing so there's no where to really stick a dollar bill anyway. I'm told that this is pretty unique to Alberta, but here what they do to solicit money, aside from getting naked, is work their way around the stage with their legs spread wide open so that guys can toss loonies ($ coins) at them in hopes of getting the money shot to stick. I kid you not. Usually a coin that actually hits and stays wins a signed poster. Then after the show's over the stripper gets to walk around the stage picking up all the coins. It's really something else.

Just cleaned up my change again two weeks ago and cashed in $360. So I guess change is good for something. It's kinda like a little savings account collecting zero interest for me. :?

Another article I read said this:

Quote:
While the government would save about $500 million annually in printing costs if it got rid of the dollar bill in favor of more durable coins, Castle said there are no plans to follow the lead of Canada and several European countries in ditching the smaller currencies.

"The dollar bill is just Americana. There is a lot of sentiment to keeping it," he said.

So it's Americana to waste $500 million a year on a sentiment? Damnit.

really? it seems as if NZ is ahead of us in just about every conceivable way, so far as progress is concerned. i guess it's like the usa and canada, except we aren't stupid enough to keep 1 centers in circulation.

I don't see why it would be such a problem. I always have a couple loonies or toonies with me. so you go to the store with a 20... buy milk, get change... use that change next time you go to the store to get milk. There it is... gone. And you don't have to break another 20.

I would take big coins over small bills any day.

I usually empty my change jar every couple of months and pull out $80-100. That's always a nice little treat. Also, i rarely get a handful of change when breaking a larger bill. Yeah it sucks when it happens but it's not a common occurance.

As for strippers, i was only joking about throwing coins at them but i guess i was actually right  . I've only been to a handful of strip clubs in my life (most of them in Montreal) and it doesn't seem to be standard practice to give a whole lot of money to the girl while she is dancing. I think they make most of their money on lap dances and private dances.

Ha! I lived in Miramar for 17 years!! We made it to the news for something other than a plane crash or a triple homocide...never thought I'd see the day :o

No point to this post, carry on.

Just my opinion on the matter. I just hate having a pocket full of loose change so I unload it the first chance I get and therefore, usually don't have it when I could actually use it.

I don't think throwing change at strippers is a common place thing outside of this province. It's really bizarre when you think about it. They go through the dances and when they've finally tore down to nothing they get the blanket out and make their way around the stage spreading their legs to provide a target for those in the front row to toss loonies and toonies at. Then the kicker at the end, they get to go around the stage kinda half dressed picking up all their change. Just reaks of class.

Do we really think that strippers wouldn't IMMEDIATELY develop a way to collect dollar coins if the bill was eliminated? I believe I've witnessed strippers pick up quarters with various parts of their bodies. I'm sure they'd do the same thing and more for a dollar.

Strippers are funny, but what about waitresses/waiters? My grandmom used to come home with between $80-$100 a night from working. It would have been horrible to have to carry that much in COINS!

If they do this, they better SERIOUSLY consider making them smaller, the current silver dollars are huge and akward.

They're barely larger than quarters.

Maybe I don't like carrying quarters either, hmmmm???

I actually very very rarely carry cash. My debit card is my best friend. I'm down in the city alone a lot going to and from radio gigs, and sometimes i have to park blocks from where I need to be. I bring just enough cash to cover parking, maybe a drink. This way, if someone snaggs my purse, it's just a simple phonecall, and they don't get anything valuable.
