It was already legal in 6 (i think) provinces, but now the supreme court has cleared the way for the federal government to introduce a bill as early as january next year. Personally, i believe it was the right decision to take. I'm glad they're moving forward on this issue.

I wonder if we will really see an exodus of lefties now???

Though I have not heard of a "gay exodus" to Massachusetts because of our gay marriage ruling...anyone???

it's not a question of winning or losing. A great many people don't seem to be happy with the supreme court's decision, here.

I didn't mean "beat" as in "win" , i meant "beat" as in did it first, for clarification. It just interests me that when it comes to social reforms Canada seems to always be one step ahead of the US.

Here's a big thumbs up to Canada.

Ok, it wasn't a very big one, but a thumbs up nonetheless.

Next move- equal marriage rights across different species.

Technically, the court didn't really do anything with this ruling yesterday. It was an advisory opinion, and they basically said that there is no reason why gay marriage cannot be legalized, and there are very good reasons why they might strike down any laws that made gay marriage illegal if they ever got such a case before them.

The practical result of this is that the PM is going to proceed with his plan to push a gay marriage bill through parliament. The population is split pretty evenly on the issue from what I understand, but with the Supreme Court's opinion, the politicians can now say that they kind of HAVE TO pass this law or the court will end up forcing them to anyway.

I think the people on the Canadian Supreme court MIGHT be a little more mature than your little brother. :?

yeah....but....don't take it so literally. The House of Commons still has to make it official so it remains to be know how much they actually allow. Do you think they would have done that if it wasn't such a hot topic in the US? probably not....
