Md. Muslim Candidate Faces Protest

Monday August 14, 2006 3:01 AM

By BEN NUCKOLS

Associated Press Writer

BALTIMORE (AP) - A protester staked out the home of a Muslim candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates, holding a sign and wearing a T-shirt that mocked Islam.

Timothy Truett sat in a folding chair Saturday on the cul-de-sac outside Saqib Ali's home in Gaithersburg with a sign reading ``Islam sucks,'' and a shirt with the slogan, ``This mind is an Allah-free zone.''

Montgomery County police sent a trespass notification form to Truett warning that he would be subject to arrest on trespassing charges if he steps onto Ali's property within the next year.

Truett called his protest ``an experiment,'' explaining: ``I had heard that Muslims were generally intolerant of views other than their own, and so I thought I would put it to the test.''

Ali took several photographs of Truett but refused to speak to him, saying he did not get the impression that Truett wanted to start a constructive dialogue.

``We don't waste our time talking to people who hate us,'' Ali said Sunday.

Truett said he did not think the sign or the T-shirt expressed a message of hate.

``It's an opinion,'' he said. ``I don't think there's anything intrinsically hateful about it.''

Ali, a Democrat, would become the first Muslim member of the House of Delegates if elected, but has not made his religion a major tenet of his campaign.

He is considered a long-shot challenger to three incumbent Democrats, Charles Barkley, Nancy King and Joan Stern. The district has three seats, and the top three vote-getters in the primary move on to the general election.

I've met Mr. Ali twice at local political rallies and I can tell you he's the exact type of person we need in office representing Muslims in the US. I disagree with many of his political positions but intelligent, motivated, and genuine politicians are few and far between. This protester guy has accomplished nothing but to give Mr. Ali some free press and embarrass the rest of us in this community. I might just go pick up an Ali sign this afternoon...

Ali quote on Eminent Domain:

"Eminent domain is a longstanding tradition that allows local governments to appropriate private property without the owner's consent in order to complete public projects such as roads. I fully support the rights of local governments to do this.

However, in the case Kelo v. New London the US Supreme Court recently decided that a local government may legally seize property owned by individuals or small businesses and turn that property over to private developers for "economic development." I adamantly oppose this ruling. It is unthinkable that we should allow our government to seize private property and sell it to the highest bidder."

the question is if the muslim guy can control the influence of his own beliefs on his acts as a politician. Because it really pisses me off to see those ridiculous muslims livin in Europe holding a sign saying something like "Alah will destroy Europe".

He can't do any worse than our current Christian administration.

So this guy is concerned about Ali leading Maryland into declaring war on Zionist Israel?

No, "sucks" is not a hateful word, but the in the context of this situation it is being used to incite hate. When you insult a religion, that's one thing... but you do it in front of someone's home and family that's an entirely different act. What exactly does this guy think Ali is going to do in the Maryland House of Delegates that will be so effected by his religion? Rename the roads? "You just up 95 to Baltimoreistan"?

That "protestor" is a fucking retard but I'm sure Mr. Ali is loving the publicity.
