OK, I got deleted in GD, but I'm going to try to spin this into a legitimate debate. Three blogs below as examples. Is it wrong to make fun of tragedy? Is it just human to make humor in an attempt to understand? Is it just mean spirited?

Do I really need to tell you I feel about this?

One thing that gets me laughing when I listen to Opie and Anthony is the obsession they have with laughing about the Scott Peterson murders.

Constant clips of splashes then a boat driving away, "lil connor" references, Lacy references.

I know its a horrible thing that happened but they way they work in jokes about it cracks me up.

I've never found a situation or occurence that I felt shouldn't be made into a joke. But I have found times, places, and/or company that made jokes inappropriate.

Some people just deal with tragedy by making it funny. Easier to swallow.

Some people just think all the attention given to tragedy is silly, so they use it to stage a protest ... aka the Schiavo blog. Hey, I think that's fair.

It's easy to make fun of tragedy. It's not so easy to think that there are real people at the heart of it, and just because the media senstionalizes things doesn't make it OK to hurt those that are already suffering. How anyone could laugh about a pregnant woman and her unborn child being killed is beyond me. Empathy is seriously lacking in this country.

Before my grandfather's funeral, my mother was trying to get my brother and I to be a bit more solemn, so I remarked, "You can't spell 'funeral' without F-U-N." Of course it's probably been used before, but it was funny at the time.

Follow me here, I am going out on an existential limb, If we are suppose to believe in Life after death and that our body is a vessel, why cant we laugh about death, because the thing we should be sad about is life, right?

I liked this last post on the Terri Schiavo blog:

Monday, May 16, 2005
That's all Folks!
Well, this has gone on long enough. I figured I might as well let you know I'm done with this blog. Last night I stubbed my toe which I'm pretty sure is a sign that God is trying to punish me for making a mockery of Terri's situation. I figure I might as well quit while I'm ahead - before He gets really mad and gives me a bad hair day or ties my shoelaces together.

To whoever enjoyed this blog:
I'm glad there are people like you out there who have the ability to recognize a joke when they see one and laugh at it without shame. People who believe that if there is a God, he probably doesn't care that much if they laugh at someone else's misfortune once in a while. I'm not saying you should go out and make a habit of laughing at cripples and retards, but if you slip up every now and then, you probably won't go to hell for it. If you can't get enough of me and my inherent awesomeness, I'll still be over here.

To whoever didn't enjoy this blog:
That's cool too. You're allowed to think what you want. I didn't force you to read this site and I can't force you to laugh at it. I hope reading a bunch of letters in no particular order didn't take too much time out of your day and wish you best of luck in your pursuit of non-offensive humor.

To whoever didn't enjoy this blog and felt it necessary to inform me of my destiny to be punished in hell for all eternity, what with the fire and brimstone and Satan and blah blah blah:
You might not realize it, but you're part of the joke. The bigger part. All I did was type a bunch of shit on a webpage which in itself was only slightly amusing. The real comedy, for me at least, showed up when you did. I'm also pretty confident that I'm not the only one that thinks this. I definitely enjoyed the creativity of some of the insults, specifically "You guys think you are funny making fun of her, Fuck you retarded assholes, whoever write this website is probably live in a retarded house or will be,". I laughed at that failed attempt at a sentence for a long, long time. Thank you, anonymous.

Who knows. Maybe one day I'll end up in a coma and the joke will be on me. If I still have the brain capacity to laugh, I'll be laughing just as hard as any of you.

there's tragedy and then there's Tragedy. It's really too bad about Teri Schaivo being a vegetable, but the way the media handled it and the way it just dragged on and on to the point of stupidity made it very, very difficult to not make a joke. Her situation was at best, a tragedy.

then you have things like bombings, murders of unborn children, et cetera. those are probably more like Tragedies and maybe ought be left alone.

Cheer up, Brian. You know what they say.
Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad.
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle,
Don't grumble, give a whistle!
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...
the music fades into the song

...always look on the bright side of life!
whistle

Always look on the bright side of life...
If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten!
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing,

When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps,
Just purse your lips and whistle -- that's the thing!
And... always look on the bright side of life...

whistle
Come on!

other start to join in
Always look on the bright side of life...
whistle

For life is quite absurd,
And death's the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow!
Forget about your sin -- give the audience a grin,
Enjoy it -- it's the last chance anyhow!

So always look on the bright side of death!
Just before you draw your terminal breath.
Life's a piece of sh*t,
When you look at it.

Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true,
You'll see it's all a show,
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you!

And always look on the bright side of life...
whistle
Always look on the bright side of life
whistle

Yeah the whole Schaivo thing reeked of exploit on both sides. And its funny how South Park was teh first public place i saw it pointed out. No one thought that she maybe wouldnt want her vegatated ass on TV but neither party was actually thinking of her. But i didnt really folow it, cuz it disgusted me, so this may have been brought up before on one of teh news daddies.

But anywho, whats done is done in history, people crack jokes about France blowing ass in wars...people die in wars, so that should be off limits? People judge others to qucikly and assume if one make slight of something they dont care. People get worked up.....Is it Al Queda, no its G8, omg we cant egt on teh subway, im so scared, omg.......and the Paris comment was awesome, its silly and if people think whoever made it or laughed at it are less of human beings, they are the ones with problems.

It's mean spirited in my opinion. It's a tragic event but you'll always have people who wanna laugh or make fun of such an event. It disgusts me.
