there are always good stories on npr, but this morning there was an editorial by one of their regulars who is in bagdad, and he had something really bizarre to report. apprently, shiite clerics have issued a new "law" declaring how produce can be displayed so as to avoid any resemblance to something sexual, be it a body part or an act. there was a man who owned a fruit stand who apparently didn't know or follow this new law, and he was EXECUTED. this was not a joke. i'm sorry, but that's just fucking nuts. what the hell is wrong with them???

let me clarify: the fruits themselves were not necessarily shaped erotically. it's their arrangement in the display that freaked these people out. oh, and lead to the put-to-death thing.
