Outrageous Quote of the Day: James Inhofe
Submitted by Christy Setzer on August 22, 2006 - 1:11pm.

“What’s happened [in Iraq] is nothing short of a miracle.”

–Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), Tulsa World, 8/22/06

Yes, folks, we know there’s a lot of wacky stuff out there from our esteemed Senate body, but the Senate Majority Project’s “Outrageous GOP Quote of the Day” award today goes to repeat winner, James Inhofe, for his beyond-delusional view of world affairs.

In a wide-ranging interview in today’s Tulsa World, in which Inhofe also reiterates his support for the “Bridge to Nowhere” as “one of the few things in Washington that works,” gets wistful for the Cold War and claims that global warming is merely a front for “international economic movements”(??), Inhofe saves his most insane salvos for the situation in Iraq.

“What’s happened there is nothing short of a miracle,” said the Senator, who is also very proud to tell you that in the recorded history of his family, there has never been a divorce or homosexual relationship, and that if you believe in global warming, well, you’re sort of like a Nazi.

But let’s stick to Iraq. Currently:

As many as 45,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed because of this war. (LINK)

GOP Senator Chuck Hagel: Iraq is in civil war.
On Fox News, Republican Senator Chuck Hagel said, “We, in fact, are in probably a low grade, maybe a very defined, civil war. You’ve got corruption everywhere, as bad as it’s ever been. You’ve got uncontrollables that we can’t control, we can’t deal with. Iran probably has more influence in Iraq than we do at this point.” (see transcript)

Even President Bush did not know when the Iraqis could handle their own security. In a speech yesterday, Bush said, “I can't tell you exactly when it's (US military presence) going to be done.” (LINK)

And of course, this is not the first controversial thing our guy from Okie has had to say on the matter.

INHOFE ON IRAQ/WAR ON TERROR:

Sept. 11 attacks were God’s way of punishing us for not defending Israel. In a speech on the US Senate floor in March 2002, Inhofe explicitly suggested that the 9/11 attacks were a form of divine retribution against the US for failing to adequately defend Israel. “One of the reasons I believe the spiritual door was opened for an attack against the United States of America is that the policy of our Government has been to ask the Israelis, and demand it with pressure, not to retaliate in a significant way against the terrorist strikes that have been launched against them." He went on to cite the most important reason for defending Israel: “Because God said so.” (Congressional Record, 3/4/02)

Abu Ghraib: “More outraged by the outrage” than by the inhumane treatment. During hearings on the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal in 2004, Inhofe created a stir when he said he was fed up with all the “humanitarian do-gooders” making such a fuss over the inhumane treatment of prisoners. (Washington Post, 5/12/04) He said he was “more outraged by the outrage” than by the treatment. After all, he said, they were probably guilty of something. (New York Times, 5/12/04)

And… despite the fact that Sen. Inhofe has been to Iraq 11 times, ranking among the most frequent visitors of all members of Congress, he still seems to think everything is going well there. (Tulsa World, 8/22/06)
