I can just see all the kids cheering when 9-11 Day arrives, and there's no school.

And then Danny asks what "nine one one day" is even for...are we celebrating the operators?

 ...no...

but seriously. it's a fucking tragedy that this happened of course, and i feel for those whom lost loved once. but we gotta move on here. we gotta find the guy who set this whole thing up instead of looking back and honoring what he did, because that's how they, the terrorists, see it. I'm really not trying to come off coldhearted, because fuck i have a good heart but move on already!

No. If Pearl Harbor wasn't acknowledged with this, I don't think 9/11 should be.

It was reported on the news today that this will be the last time because construction on the Freedom Tower will commence next year (knock on wood).

I can see the hypocrisy in this when you consider the tragedy that the people in the Gulf States endured. They didn't have a big memorial service marking the one year anniversary of the hurricane (at least that I saw). And it was a bit strange to know that many of the widows and widowers have "moved on" and remarried. Of course many were young, so you can't blame them.
I think part of it has to do with our culture and commemorating things every 5/10 years. It seems that 5 and 10 year anniversaries are held as prominent benchmarks....don't know how that started.
If anything, I think it served to remind people that we are at war and the President's address this evening was one of the best speeches he has given.

Yeah I bet it really inspires people who usually disagree with him. Mover of mountains, that GWB.

Well, in that regard I don't think people who disagree with President Bush's policies need to also disagree with memorializing those who lost their lives on 9/11/01.

All I honestly hope is that someone has the good sense to not officially call the new structure the freedom towers. Also, what are the current plans for this thing? Are they still going with the horrific art deco fiasco that was I think originally approved?

Yeah but there's a difference. Hurricanes are Natural Disasters, The Gulf Coast was simply due, and vastly unprepared. Then there were a series of failures on all levels of judgement from personal all the way up to the highest governmental levels. There were thousands of cars at the superdome for instance, unused trains and busses, and flights out. I could never put the blame on entirely one entity

9-11 is a series of hateful acts performed by humans. Hurricanes happen, Terrorism doesn't have to. If anything it just made the plight of poor common middle eastern people worse.

We don't necessarily other than regionally recognize earthquakes or various hurricanes, like Ivan, Andrew, Hugo, Katrina, Rita, Camille etc.

I went down to New Orleans to help out. Everyone should go, because ultimately government will always be pathetically inadequate because it's impossible to treat 289,000 individual cases with one macro solution. There are a multitude of multilevel issues that made New Orleans a particularly more disastrous area than the rest of the gulf coast, and it was commerated I believe, but I don't see why they are any more special than Charleston, or Dade County Florida or Lake Charles, Louisiana. Essentially it's 50+ years of not spending nearly enough on infrastructure and honestly the city got too big and destroyed wetlands that protected it but hey that's another thread.

911 was an attack, that hurricane is an act of nature that happens that they should have been better prepared for, that they should have taken more seriously granted that could be applied to 911 as well but I think the average person would differentiate between a terrible act of nature and a terrible act by humans.

But yeah, for some reason we are preoccupied with dates especially every 5 to 10 years of great events and terrible ones.

i meant to say "ones"

of all i know about terrorist' way of thinking, which admittingly isn't as much as i probably should know, is that whenever we stand still by something that happened in the past, it makes the terrorists proud of what they have done, they see it as an honor. i've been looking at NPR.org, because i'm pretty sure that's where i heard it, to see if i could find the soundbite of where i heard this, but i can't find it.

well there are always going to be assholes who find joy in others' sorrow, that doesn't mean we shouldn't honor our dead. fuck the terrorists. if we modify our normal behavior to avoid making them happy, isn't that the same as modifying it to avoid making them MAD? either way, we let them dictate our actions. so i say fuck them.
