I got this picture from the guy who headed up the marijuana initiative in Colorado--Mason Tvert. This picture was in The Rocky Mountain News on Tuesday.
I hope this passes...nothing like the paranoid feeling you get when your realize the downstairs neighbors can smell what you're up to when you and your buddies smoke a doobie and watch Half Baked.
There's no chance of this passing, and that's a shame because the comparison of alcohol versus marijuana is 100% accurate. A case can be made that pot impairs a person's ability to drive as much as alcohol does, but using this as a rationale would make the case for banning alcohol.
In my opinion, marijuana will never see legalization as a recreational drug because it can be grown by anyone (with a bit of know-how) and thus can't be taxed. It's a lot easier to stop at the liquor store than to have a still set up in your backyard.

This is true, but pot smokers are notoriously lazy. If I could stop at 7-11 and pick up a dub-sack on the way home from work, I'd do it, and gladly pay the taxes.

No marijuana initiative has ever failed to pass in this state (okay, so there's only been two before this one). Secondly, conservative Colo. talking heads, e.g. Mike Rosen, are backing this amendment. And finally, it will still be illegal to grow or sell pot in Colorado...this amendment just makes it legal to possess up to an ounce of it if you're over 21-years-old. It's a baby step. We're not going to turn into Amsterdam...yet...

I don't smoke pot, but I really don't see why it's not legalized.
One million jobs depend on tobbacco, plus countless local governments rely on the taxes from it. More importantly, to many people legalizing it would be "surrendering" in the war on drugs and if the last year in Iraq has shown us anything about the federal government, it will refuses to back down even when it's obviosuly wrong.
I have nothing but anecdotal evidence to back this up, but pot abuse does have some negative long term effects on mental health. I've know too many stoner types to doubt this.

The group that launched this initiative operates under the premise that marijuana is safer than alcohol. I too would argue that booze is far worse for the consumer mentally and physically than weed.
Next year, I'm launching the shroom initiative! It's time we all talk to God and get some real answers!
