I guess I can do nothing but (perhaps irrationally) bitch and complain this week about the assorted injustice in the world -- that this man would be denied workman's compensation because he was not ordered to the WTC.

I know of a guy who, a month after a sedan car bumped the back of a 30 foot truck he was sitting in, filed for workman's compensation and stopped showing up to work for a year, and even though he was seen at another job, claimed he could not work, and has been collecting for an entire year with the employer not having any recoarse whatsoever to either have him come back to work nor take him off the payroll. The guy is fine, the truck wasn't scratched, and he's full of it.

But this guy, who went to the WTC and worked when it was most very much needed, cannot have benefits.

I'm so sick of everything I want to scream.

So if I was at my house and my office was on fire, I should get workers comp if I drove to the office and got hurt while I was trying to put the fire out??? No.

Anyway the guy got benefits from being a volunteer.

Maybe you should, actually. If a person who is on an airplane flight for their job get's hurt or killed, they are "covered"; what difference does it make if you were working from your house and ran into the office to try to help your employer or co-workers versus having been there at the moment it occured? The point is, you were there and you were helping and you were hurt, hypothetically, right?

Yes, as an official "volunteer" sure - but the fact that he would be denied at all is what bothered me, especially since there are so many people who are mooching off of the worker's compensation system (along with ever system) who are perfectly FINE and are not hurt and are able bodied to work, where the systems being scammed don't have the resources to stop the scams. This guy wasn't trying to scam anyone, he was just denied on in what my mind's eye saw as a technicality.

Hell who knows, I supposed I'm wrong. Wouldn't be the first time, not even today.

I think the moral of this story is "Don't help people."

To me it sounds like this guy was double dipping. Trying to get workers comp from his employer and from the volunteer fund.

I know, gawd, doesn't it though?! Does that suck or what?!?

That's certainly a possiblity; I hadn't thought of that. Good Call.
