Looks like it's a small plane that went into an apartment building.

Hopefully a total fluke... :?

Looks like it was an accident, with a helicopter:

Aircraft crashes into NYC building
Unknown whether plane or chopper involved
BREAKING NEWS
NBC News and news services

Updated: 3:04 p.m. ET Oct 11, 2006
NEW YORK - An aircraft crashed into a high-rise apartment building on Manhattan's Upper East Side in New York City on Thursday, NBC News reported. There were conflicting reports about whether it was an airplane or a chopper.

There were no immediate reports on injuries.

Video from the scene showed at least three buildings in the high-rise engulfed in flames. A column of gray smoke rose over the city, and raging flames could be seen in four windows on two upper floors.

According to local affiliate WNBC, officials said the aircraft was a helicopter, not a plane. That had not been confirmed by any other sources.

The crash occurred near the heliport on the East River, according to MSNBC cable.

Fire Department spokeswoman Emily Rahimi said an aircraft struck struck the 20th floor of a building on East 72nd Street. Witnesses said the crash caused a loud noise, and burning and falling debris was seen. Flames were seen shooting out of the windows.

Check back for developments on this story.

NBC News and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

 ok, but i still say you're not sitting where i'm sitting. of course, not everyone in the ny/nj area reacts this way, but on 9/11 everyone thought at first that it was just a private plane that went off course... whatever. just glad it wasn't another attack. yet. i mean, there are a few weeks left until the election.

The sirens scream wanton attention.
Time to take heed and change direction.
Time to take stock and make omissions.

Evacuation. Evacuation.

Time to take leave all formal functions.
Time to plant seeds of a reconstruction.
No time this time to feign reluctance.

It's like your waiting for a diamond shore to wash your way.
Bets put aside you're evil. Lets crawl into your face.
A vision vague or not raising a frightful wake you up.

Time for evacuation. Evacuation. Evacuation. Evacuation.
Evacuation. Evacuation.

There was a solemn man. Watched his twilight disappear. In the sand.
Altered by a falling eagle. A warning sign. Sign.
He sensed that worry could be strength with a plan he said, "Time for evacuation."

Evacuation...

Or they want everyone to read their site/newspaper/magazine so they can sell more ad space.
