Well not exactly...this is complete and utter crap........Could only happen in the US...

Quote:
THE United States has slapped a ban on Vegemite, outraging Australian expatriates there.

The bizarre crackdown was prompted because Vegemite contains folate, which in the US can be added only to breads and cereals.
Expatriates say that enforcement of the ban has been stepped up recently and is ruining lifelong traditions of having Vegemite on toast for breakfast.

Former Geelong man Daniel Fogarty, who now lives in Calgary, Canada, said he was stunned when searched while crossing the US border recently.

"The border guard asked us if we were carrying any Vegemite," Mr Fogarty said.

"I was flabbergasted." Paul Watkins, who owns a store called About Australia in San Antonio, Texas, said he had been forced to stop importing Vegemite six months ago.

"We have completely stopped bringing it in," he said.

"(US authorities) have made a stance and there is nothing that can be done about it."

So I've seen Bovril, Oxo and Marmite in HEB and Whole Foods... are those going to be prevented from being taken on planes too?

I had a jar of this in my backpack when I went to the states. I would not have been a happy little vegemite if they'd tried to confiscate it.

Looks like this is an 'urban legend':

Australian officials in Vegemite probeBy Peter Mitchell in Los Angeles

AUSTRALIAN authorities have launched an investigation into reports Vegemite has been banned in the United States.

Supermarkets in the US continue to stock Vegemite and say they have no plans to remove Australia's iconic savoury spread from their shelves.

Adding to the confusion, a spokesperson from the Australian embassy in Washington DC said US officials had recently said they had no concerns about Vegemite.

But weekend media reports said US customs officers had been taking jars of Vegemite from travellers' bags as they entered the country.

"We are aware of reports that US authorities have been seeking to stop people from bringing Vegemite into the country," a spokesperson from the Australian embassy in Washington DC said.

"From our perspective there is no food safety issue with Vegemite and we had been advised recently by US authorities that Vegemite was not of concern to them.

"We are liaising with US authorities to determine whether the media reports are accurate."

The ban was reportedly due to Vegemite containing folate, which the US Food and Drug Administration allows to be added only to bread and cereals.

FDA officials did not return phone calls today.

American supermarkets such as Bristol Farms and Whole Foods were selling Vegemite in their stores today.

Nearly 100,000 Australians and New Zealanders, most of whom swear by the salty brown spread, live in the United States.

Vegemite is made in Australia by US-based Kraft Foods Inc.
