Of course this is a very easy thing to say in an opinion poll on the interweb.

Also - this question is a bit confusing. What does it mean to volunteer to die for my country? Does it just mean I'm offering up my life, or is it really more a question of whether I would put myself in a position where death was a highly probable outcome?

I'm always reminded of The Godfather II when Sonny says to Michael, "Your country is not your blood " .

I would die for my family and friends, but for a country, any country, the simple answer is no.

Also, I look at it like this. Our leaders spend billions of our dollars and invade in our lives any way they can, and they won't return a phonecall or an email, do you think your leaders would die for you?

I would give up my life to protect the ideals that, in my opinion, are most central to what my country stands for. But I would let my country fall rather than allow it to become something that I wouldn't recognize as America.

I'm approaching this from a very black and white perspective here; you die or your country completely collapses beyond repair.

I voted no. I don't know if that's just selfishness or not.

Yup. This is how I feel.

I will stick my neck out at any cost and scrap to the fucking death for my family and friends. I'm very passionate about loyalty, backing up those who are close to you, and being real. That's how I was raised.

But "dying for my country" sounds kind of silly to me. Especially when considering the fact that I'm not completely happy with how things are run here.

This is a very interesting question for me.

About 5 years ago, the obvious answer to this question was "Yes", because I joined the marine corps.

Now it is a bit different. I still voted "Yes", but there are stipulations. First of all, dying in Iraq or Afghanistan right now is not dying for your country. In fact, there hasn't been a legitimate opportunity to sacrifice yourself for America since WWII.

So the answer is "Yes", if a situation were to arise that would threaten the liberty of America and it's peoples, I would be willing to give my life to protect it. Is anything happening today that would justify me giving my life? No.

Excuse me? Apparently someone forgot about Grenada...

Forgive me my ignorance. How did Grenada threaten the liberty of the US or its people, and was it something that required human lives to be put at stake?

I prefer Patton's thoughts on the matter... "Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country." So, I'll say that if the situation warranted it, I would fight and kill for my country, but I'll take a pass on the dying part.

Depends on the context. If it's a WWII situation than yes. If it's Iraq, hell fucking no.

Makes you wonder, is the whole attitude of a nation based on the wars we are currently fighting? At the very least the two are connected.
