I believe before they would turn and run, his more moderate supporters would waver, possibly leading to a defeat for the Republicans in the 2006 house elections. That'll show how much of a "mandate" really exists. Since the "teh fags r gunna marry!!!" issue is off the table now in most places, perhaps people will vote on real issues.
