OK, so Bush wants to renew the Patriot Act b/c we need it to keep Americans safe.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050610/ap_ ... MlJVRPUCUl

But, it turns out, the only thing we were missing prior to 9/11 was competent FBI agents.

The following statement made me snort milk out of my nose.

GWB wrote:
The Patriot Act has helped save American lives and it has protected American liberties.

Maybe because it left us with fewer liberties to actually have protected.

Seeing how GWB gets whatever he wants, I expect this to pass with little to no debate.

I loved this quote from him on the recent arrest of the father/son in Lodi, California for their links to al-qaeda:

GWB wrote:
When we find any hint about any possible wrongdoing or a possible cell, that we'll follow up - by the way, honoring the civil liberties of those to whom we follow up.

Gotta throw that last disclaimer in there.

No sense getting upset. There are no checks and balances in the government right now. You might as well get mad that it will get dark tonight.

I guess one reason would be is that I want the gov't to be able to do searches when they have probable cause for a threat.

the problem is their interpretation of what can be a threat

And also, they don't need probable cause.

That would be fine if the government didn't have such a fucked up definition of "bad".

laws are necessarily made by the govt, but in theory reflect the voice of the masses

*corrected

Yeah, I in no way see how the American public is crying out for fewer liberties. The time of panic is through, let the law die.

you see it as people losing liberties, others see it as being protected, and neither side is going to convince the other of any different
