ORLANDO, Fla. -- Investigators are searching for a woman on Thursday who was videotaped while spraying a girl with a pressured water hose at an Orlando car wash.
Surveillance cameras captured the woman holding the girl with one hand and holding the hose in the other hand at an arm's length distance.
Marlene Diaz, a manager at Magical Car Wash, said she has never seen this type of abuse before.
"You don't do that to a kid," Diaz said. "No child deserves that."
The video showed the woman dousing the girl, spraying her in the face and down her legs. The woman continued to grab the girl as she tried to flee.
Investigators said they believe the child is 3 years old.
The driver of a white Hyundai Sonata shown in the video watched the woman spray the child for a moment before walking away.
The video showed the child trying to hide her face while the woman pinned her to a wall and sprayed her at close range.
"Disgusted," Diaz said. "I'm mad, infuriated as to how someone could do that to a little child."
Investigators said they believe the woman is the child's mother and used the pressure hose as punishment.
"The girl probably had some kind of accident in the back seat of the car, maybe urinated or spilled a drink," said Orange County Sheriff's Office Cmdr. Matt Irwin. "God knows what kind of punishment she gets elsewhere."
Officials said the water shoots out of the hoses with a force of about 1,200 pounds per square inch, powerful enough to create the type of friction and sting from a rug burn.
"Your skin gets red and at times it could peel," Diaz said.
Diaz didn't see what happened until she checked the surveillance tapes, but said she heard the girl crying after the mother stopped spraying her.
Diaz said she also heard the mother say, "You're going to learn to respect me. You don't treat me bad. You don't mistreat me; I'm your mother."
Surveillance cameras showed the women stripped the girl, leaving her standing in the car wash bay naked, while they grabbed a towel and put her back in the car.
Once investigators locate the women, they said the mother will likely face child abuse charges

There is no good excuse for using a pressure hose on a little kid, but this story seems a little blown out of proportion. If a kid had an accident...maybe peed or something, then it's not unreasonable to try and rinse them off, and get their cloths off. Ideally you'd just go into a restroom and wash them off and get a change of cloths. The mother did seem pretty angry and taking that hose to the kid was the wrong move. But personally, from experience, my kid has had accidents and I've used a (normal) hose once or twice at my house, not as punishment, but to actually make the rinsing off more fun. Kids are often made to feel shamed by their parents when they have an accident (like this mother was obviously doing). I think it's important to let them know it's ok to have an accident sometimes, and downplay any negativity. My kid loves to play with the hose at home, so it made it more fun to just spray off. I'm just saying that spraying a kid with a hose is in no way child abuse. It may be that the mother was ignorant to the fact that the pressure hose may have harmed the kid. That being the case or not, she should still be found and disciplined in some form. I agree it was a bad move on her part. However, I think they tried to make a little more "news" out of this story than is actually there.

Dude! Not child abuse?? I use those washers to get the shit off my rides and if there was any more pressure coming out of it, it would peel the paint off it 'em!! I've had my folks spray me off as a youngster when I was really dirty with the garden hose and I didn't mind, cause it was a garden hose! This woman hangs onto, what appears to be a 3 YEAR OLD, strips her naked and screams in her face while hitting her with 1200psi. You don't think that kid's traumatized from that??

I think your reactions in general are just a tad over dramatic. Emphasized further by your own admission that if you found this woman you would beat her up.
Anyway, I never said that what she did was not child abuse, I simply said that spraying a kid with a hose, in and of itself, is certainly not. What she did definitely should be considered inappropriate, and possibly abusive, depending on the details.

Have you ever been sprayed with a power hose? This wasn't a garden spicket.

The story's been updated now...the woman called deputies after seeing herself on TV. She says she did it because the child was throwing a tantrum and that the hose wasn't on full-blast.

I have not disagreed that her actions were inappropriate. However, the mother also stated she had it was on a lower setting. She wasn't full power blasting her kid. If it were up to me, parents wouldn't even be allowed to spank their kids. I think that's also inappropriate. So I certainly think this is not OK. But I do think there are far worse things parents do to their kids that get under-reported. This is just overblown and over dramatic "news".

What really bugs me about this is that this is a woman who has clearly lost her cool, and resorted to something really over the top as a punishment. Disciplining your children is difficult because you are the one they look to for protection and security. When you place such a small child in a situation where you are dealing out something physically uncomfortable, you're really risking screwing them up.

I agree that what this woman did was clearly wrong. However, expressing the desire to beat her for doing it is expressing a desire to do the same thing to the mother as the mother did to the child. It's like saying, "Shut the fuck up! There'll be no cussing in THIS house!!!" It's giving yourself to the go-ahead to do what you would keep others from doing. Now, I realize you haven't done anything, so no...it's not exactly the same thing. But still. It's weird to want to abuse someone for abusing someone else. Acting on this would just be passing along abuse and a garden hose so that abuse grows up nice and strong everywhere around us. The only way to stop abusers is to show them how to do something else, not teach them better, more painful angles on the same behavior.

Right, cause people that abuse kids looooooooooooove to be shown that what they're doing is wrong and will sit and listen intently I"m sure.
And for the last time, I didn't say I want to beat her up. See above Homer post.
