Marines will stay close to home for urban training
Unit to use downtown Toledo

By DALE EMCH
BLADE STAFF WRITER

The Marines will take over parts of downtown Toledo as sounds of gunfire will echo off buildings when training exercises are conducted next weekend.

A Marine Corps unit based in Perrysburg will stage the exercises from 9 p.m. Jan. 7 to about noon Jan. 9, Maj. Gregory Cramer said.

Major Cramer said most of the 130-member unit - Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines - will take part in the exercises.

"We're looking for an urban environment to do our training," he said. "Urban training is one of the proficiencies we're required to maintain."

Major Cramer said Marines will be dressed in green and will be carrying rifles through the streets, but the exercises should have a minimal impact on the downtown area. He said the Marines will be firing blanks and conducting operations throughout the area.

"The only request we would have of folks, if they happen to be near where an exercise is taking place, is to stay away as much as possible," Major Cramer said.

The exercise area roughly will be north of Monroe Street, west of the Maumee River, south and west of Cherry Street, south of Woodruff Ave., and east of Collingwood Boulevard.

Toledo Police Chief Mike Navarre said military exercises have been conducted before in the downtown area with a minimal impact on city residents. He said city and police officials have been working with the Marines to help the exercises go smoothly.

"Training is extremely important, not just in our profession, but in the military too," Chief Navarre said. "We're not going to place any obstacles in their way."

Jean Atkin, administrator for the Lucas County Common Pleas Court, said the unit was granted permission to use the courthouse grounds. The unit, though, won't use the interior of the courthouse.

"We used to do this when we were kids - you know, running around the woods," Ms. Atkin said. "They're just going to use the downtown."

Ehhh. Not sure how I feel about this.

Pay attention to the cracked streets and the broken homes
Some call it slums some call it nice
I want to take you through a wasteland I like to call my home
Welcome to paradise

I don't really see a problem with this, unless someone wants to give me reasons why I should have a problem with it.

Wouldn't it be kind of weird to see Marines in full combat gear running around downtown Boise or along the river in Milwaukee?

In the summer of '01 in Allentown, PA there were alot of shootings happening and the national guard came in. They were in full gear with machine guns and standing on the street corners.

It happened to be the same weekend as my "bar run". So there were about 25 of us running around Allentown from bar to bar. Good times. 8)

Well I, for one, feel honored to live within 3 hours of a place that sucks so badly, it's apparently comparable to conditions in Iraq.

I bet they would have chosen Detroit but they were worried about the gangs shooting back.

Downtown, yes. 30th and Cherry, not so much. But the Marines might be beaten to death by a gang of youth with bats in that neighborhood.

I have a hard time believing ANY Marine would be worried about a gang of youths, even if you were joking.

Oh definately. Un-uniformed, roaming gangs of youths in Iraq setting off IED's and sniping at troops haven't been a cause for fear at all.

No kidding, our youth in Milwaukee don't fuck around.

"Nine boys and one adult are in custody after the savage beating of a 36-year-old Milwaukee man who died Tuesday evening."
http://www.jsonline.com/news/metro/oct02/84237.asp

"Police say they have arrested two teenagers who allegedly were part of a group of teens and young men who robbed and fatally beat a mentally ill man in early July."
(why go after an able bodied man when you can beat a mentally ill man on the 4th of July?)
http://www.jsonline.com/news/metro/aug04/249289.asp

"Three juveniles have been charged as adults with first-degree intentional homicide in the brutal beating of a homeless man that one of the boys compared to the violent video game 'Grand Theft Auto.'"
(this one took place three blocks from my home)
http://www.jsonline.com/news/metro/oct04/267967.asp

Good times.

I know that they might not fuck around but you realize that these are MARINES right? The best of the military? The Few, the strong, the proud? You know they could break your arm and smash your face with their boot in a few small moves? Marines are a badass group of people and I have a hard time believing that any gang member would scare them.

Funny story:

My unit trained in a Syracuse suburb on an abandoned Air Force base. Well, it was still open to the public and we were conducting security patrols and check points. It was dusk, I was in charge of a security checkpoint and two other Marines. My CO had just chewed my ass out for not being aggressive enough with mock African's.

So two "African's" come up, they start digging about twenty feet from our location (we had a humvee). Then they start going LALALALALA! LALALALA! As if arguing. Then a car pulls up. Well, I tell this girl driving and a women to get out of the car, they see two "terrorists" not too far being secured by another Marine. My buddy and I draw our weapons up because they're not cooperating (we were told that women were going to part of the operation, we thought they were part of the game.) I get a response finally. I have them turn the car off, get out of the car, get on their knees. Suddenly a 240 golf starts blaring from the apartment complex. They start freakin' out. The girl is bawling her eyes out, and we realize that they weren't a part of the game. Come to find out, the girl was 15, about to turn 16, and it was the FIRST time she'd ever driven a car.

Funniest thing ever.

Reserve Units do this all the time. We train in a lot of parks and stuff.

Judging by what Toledo was like the day of the PJ concert, I don't think anyone will notice Marines taking over downtown. That place was like a ghost town when we were there (with the exception of right on the river).
