Someone was angry that the Southwest shirt incident was getting CNN coverage, and I too have noticed that some of the things that get reported just make me shake my head and pity the poor sap who had to cover that beat. So let's use this thread to mock the media and some of the stuff they print. I'll start off with a prime example--Michael Jackson fell down.

Jackson Falls in Throng Outside Theater
Associated Press
2 hours, 46 minutes ago

Michael Jackson fell to the ground as he tried to make his way through a throng of hundreds of fans outside the Victoria Palace theater, where he watched the stage version of the movie "Billy Elliot."

Security staff forced a path for Jackson, 47, through the admirers and photographers standing outside the theater so he could reach the front door. But the singer fell in the commotion.

At the performance, Jackson mingled with other spectators, chatting and signing autographs.

"He talked to us saying hello and there were a lot of people around him," said Roxanne Wisenberg, 47, of San Diego. "He was very nice and his children were with him."

Jackson was in London to work on recording a song to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims. He was staying at the Dorchester Hotel in Park Lane, where fans gathered outside in hopes of seeing him.

The visit to Britain was believed to be his first since his acquittal in June of child molestation charges. He has spent much of his time in Bahrain.

Chimp quits smoking
October 5, 2005

A chimpanzee in a Chinese zoo has successfully kicked a 16-year smoking habit after becoming hooked when two spouses died and her daughter left.

Ai Ai, a 27-year-old chimp at the Qinling Safari Park in northern China's Shaanxi province, ended her tobacco dependency when zoo keepers put her on a strict regime that included walking, music therapy and exercise sessions, Xinhua news agency said.

"In the first few days, she squealed for cigarettes every now and then, but as her life became more colourful, she gradually forgot about them altogether," one zookeeper was quoted as saying.

"She's served fried dishes and dumplings at every meal, alongside her usual diet of milk, banana and rice," he said, "I also put earphones on her so that she could enjoy some pop music from my walkman."

According to the report, Ai Ai became a smoker in 1989, shortly after her first spouse died.

She started demanding more and more cigarettes after her second spouse died in 1997 and her daughter departed to another zoo, it said.

The report did not say why zookeepers started giving the animal cigarettes, or whether they faced punishment.

China is the world's largest cigarette consumer, with education about the dangers of tobacco not widely known. China has lax laws protecting the rights of animals.

It doesn't bug me that much when a low-level story gets a little quick blip and that's all.

What's truly egregious are the soap operas that have affected such a small group of people that drag on forever....

Ashlee Simpson Really Does Sing on 'SNL'

Sun Oct 9, 9:44 AM ET
Associated Press

Ashlee Simpson sang — really, she did — without incident on "Saturday Night Live" in her return to the scene of last year's lip-synch fiasco.

"I wrote this song after my last 'Saturday Night Live' appearance," she said, introducing the mournful "Catch Me When I Fall."

She belted out the song with gusto, the only boost seeming to come with a brief echo effect on her vocal in the chorus. When she was done, Simpson smiled and hopped in relief.

It was nearly a year after Simpson's embarrassing appearance on the same stage, where her voice was heard singing the wrong song when she held her microphone at her waist. She danced an awkward jig and then walked off the stage.

The fakery made her a laughingstock and Simpson was booed lustily when she appeared at the Orange Bowl a few months later.

Leading up to this week's appearance, "Saturday Night Live" executive producer Lorne Michaels promised it would be her singing — not some tapes — when she went on the air.

"Who will be the one to save me from myself?" Simpson sang in the ballad. "Who's going to catch me when I fall?"

Later in the show she came back for a peppier number, "Boyfriend," where her vocal was augmented by a backup singer.

"Thank you so much!" she said at the end, blowing a kiss to the audience.

She should have lip synced. She can't sing for shit.

Some Rabbis Criticize New Madonna Song

By RACHEL HOAG, Associated Press Writer

A song on Madonna's upcoming album dedicated to a Kabbalist rabbi is drawing criticism from some rabbis, the Israeli Maariv daily reported Sunday. The album, "Confessions on a Dance Floor," is to be released on Nov. 15 and features a track entitled "Isaac" about Yitzhak Luria, a 16th century Jewish mystic and Kabbalah scholar.

Rabbis who oversee Luria's tomb and a seminary in the northern town of Safed are unimpressed with Madonna's musical tribute and see the inclusion of the song about Luria on the album as an attempt by the pop star to profit from his name.

Madonna made a much publicized visit to Israel in 2004, when she visited many sites important to Kabbalah, but she did not travel north to Luria's grave.

The singer and actress was raised a Roman Catholic but has become a follower of Kabbalah in recent years. Madonna has adopted the Hebrew name Esther, wears a red string around her wrist to ward off the "evil eye" and reportedly refuses to perform on the Jewish Sabbath. She is one of a group of non-Jewish celebrities who have taken an interest in Kabbalah in recent years.

The movement has sparked skepticism and criticism among many of the rabbis who specialize in studying and teaching Kabbalah. Jewish tradition holds that Kabbalah is so powerful and complicated that students may not begin to approach it until after age 40. Among the elements of Kabbalah are mystical meanings drawn from holy books by recombination of letters and other signs.

Rabbi Rafael Cohen, head of a seminary named after Luria, suggested Madonna's actions could lead to divine retribution.

"Jewish law forbids the use of the name of the holy rabbi for profit. Her act is just simply unacceptable and I can only sympathize for her because of the punishment that she is going to receive from the heavens," Cohen told Maariv.

Another rabbi called for Madonna to be thrown out of the community.

"Such a woman brings great sin on kabbalah," Rabbi Israel Deri told Maariv. "I hope that we will have the strength to prevent her from bringing sin upon the holiness of the rabbi (Yitzhak Luria)."

Deri serves as deputy chair of the Religious Sites Authority, which oversees Luria's burial site in Safed. Neither Deri nor Cohen were available for comment on Sunday.

Spears' Auction Concludes - Without Bra

1 hour, 36 minutes ago
Associated Press

Britney Spears stripped her charity auction of a jewel-encrusted bra, but still raised thousands of dollars for hurricane relief efforts.

Spears auctioned dozens of personal items on eBay, with proceeds going to The Britney Spears Foundation to benefit the Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Fund.

On Saturday, she posted a message on her Web site saying she was "concerned that some of you might be confusing this bra with something that it's not."

The 23-year-old pop star said she wore the white stone bra — bids had risen to over $47,000 on the auction Web site — during her HBO special — but not during her performance of "... Baby One More Time."

"I feel the correct thing to do is remove this item from the auction because I don't want any of you to feel misled," she said.

It was the second time the bra had been removed from the auction. Earlier, an eBay staffer pulled it because it violated the Web site's policy of not selling used undergarments. The decision was reversed, though, because the bra fit under the category of memorabilia.

The auction otherwise concluded with a "I Have the Golden Ticket" tank top going for $1,200, her ottoman selling for $510, her Chanel high heels for $770, her two-piece sectional sofa for $3,050 and her red-tab jeans for $4,001.

Report: Mary-Kate Olsen Leaving NYU

Associated Press

What would Bob Saget say about this? Mary-Kate Olsen, who shared the role of Michelle with her twin sister, Ashley, on the '80s comedy "Full House," has dropped out of college, early in her sophomore year, according to a published report.

"Mary-Kate Olsen has taken an approved leave of absence from New York University to focus on her increasing responsibilities as co-president of Dualstar Entertainment Group and to pursue personal interests," her publicist, Michael Pagnotta, was quoted on People magazine's Web site Friday.

Olsen's twin sister, Ashley, also co-president of Dualstar, will remain at NYU.

A message to the publicist from The Associated Press wasn't immediately returned Friday.

Mary-Kate, 19, spent six weeks at a treatment center for an eating disorder in summer 2004.

Since starting out as babies on "Full House" — Saget played their father — the twins have created a multimedia empire with a clothing line, feature films, direct-to-video movies and other merchandise.

Mary-Kate, a brunette, and Ashley, who is blond, became co-presidents of Dualstar when they turned 18. Each is estimated to be worth more than $150 million.

More Teens Wearing Pajamas To School

POSTED: 10:09 am EDT October 18, 2005

OGDEN, Utah -- There's a new fad of students -- mostly girls -- wearing pajama bottoms to school, and so far administrators are not making a fuss about it.

"Some days you don't want to get dressed up for school. Like when it's raining and cold. You just want to be cozy," said Ben Lomond High School junior Elvia Escalante, 16.

School administrators in Ogden, Weber and Davis school districts say the pajamas have been modest and there hasn't been a problem.

"There are worse things a kid could wear to school," said Ross Lunceford, principal of Hillcrest Elementary School in Ogden.

"There's a fine line there, and I think sometimes we need to pick our battles. Should we get into a tussle over pajamas?" said Eileen Nicholas, student and family services teacher specialist for Ogden district.

Some students don't think much of the attire.

"They may be comfy, but it makes you look trashy and it gives you the idea you can just slack off for the day," said Ben Lomond High School senior Alena Marshall, 18.

Mystery milk thief's cheeky notes

Mystery surrounds the identity of a serial milk thief who has been leaving cheeky misspelled handwritten notes on the doorsteps of homes in Berkshire.

Some residents in Woodley, Reading, are both amused and annoyed about the prankster who signs his notes: "Do you like dry cerial?".

One elderly Beechwood Avenue couple has been targeted three times in two weeks.

After several complaints from people in Beechwood Avenue and Avon Place, Dairy Crest and police are now investigating.

Audrey Harding, 80, of Beechwood Avenue, revealed her elderly neighbours Alexander and Phyllis Burke, had milk bottles whisked from their doorsteps on two Thursdays in succession and then the following Friday.

She said: "They put a note through the letterbox saying: 'You don't know how lucky you are to get the things you want, they are taken for granted'.

"It was signed: 'From Your Friendly Milk Thief'.

"You can't help laughing really but it creates huge inconvenience for some people."

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said she believed a child was behind the milk snatching because of the "amateur handwriting of the notes".

She said: "The note just said: 'Do you like dry cerial? Hope so because we've drunk your milk. Yours Sincerely, Your Neighbourhood Milk Thief',"

Halt milk deliveries

"It's really quite annoying because I don't like to think people are walking around our garden.

"We have been here 40 years and this has only happened once before, 30 years ago, when a local fisherman took our bottle as he went off fishing and the milkman told us.

"My husband said that if it carries on we will have to stop our deliveries."

Dairy Crest said it was not charging customers for stolen pints and urged them to report all thefts to the police.

A spokesman said: "The theft of milk from the doorstep is a crime and we are actively working with police to apprehend the thieves responsible.

"Dairy Crest takes the stealing of milk from customers very seriously - as not only does it affect our customers but also damages the livelihood of the milkmen."

'One wife after another'

London - A Bosnian pensioner who claims to have been married 162 times says he wants to marry at least another 100 women.

Nedeljko Ilincic, 75, said he first got married when he was 15 and since then it has been "just one wife after another".

He now plans to see if his "feat" is worthy of a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The former waiter has 14 children from different marriages. He is currently single, but has not lost appetite for marriage.

He told a local newspaper: "I'm still very popular with the ladies. At the moment there are two I could choose from... and I've heard one of my ex-wives also wants me back." - Ananova.com
