overall i think they are a bad thing. hyping up ridiculous things that have no importance for anyone while dumbing down important stories with repetition.

It depends. They are great for huge breaking news, ex. 9/11, Katrina, election coverage but suck when those kind of major events aren't happening.

they're necessary because the major networks are terrible but they suck. they've been so clueless this whole primary season and its really caused me to lose all respect for them. last night while discussing the today's democratic primaries, anderson cooper asked an 'expert' if they were winner take all. no democratic primaries are winner take all and this has been painfully obvious for months. i'm a 23 year old kid and i know this and its this guy's job to talk about this all day and he asks this question.

One might expect that with all that extra time they devote to news they could provide more in depth analysis. Almost all of their attempts at this fail miserably. I really can't stand the format, but meybe thats just me.

ok, maybe that needs to be changed to US 24 news networks?
because most of the ones I know in Europe (BBC News 24, Euronews, LCI), they hype far less than regular news and actually go places the others don't have time to (and the BBC, even ITV are pretty good news-wise as it is, much more in-depth than the French news for example).

I've loved the juxtapostion on the news channels the past couple days. Two lead stories, one where whole towns are devastated with hundreds killed and thousands suddenly left homeless with only the shirts on their backs. And a very rich guy gets married in London.

borderline worthless.

They run with anything do little if any fact checking and desperately fight for attention.

About the only good thing they are for is running background in an airport etc for quick hits of what's going at the moment.

The editorial commentary.... exceptionally worthless. Catered Drivel.

The problem of course is that the major networks are similar.

if it weren't for prescription drug advertising... how would we ever have this level of coverage for the Royal Wedding while trying to maintain a somber disaster like tone?

I do for the most part like the BBC. I enjoyed it while I was over in London.

For that matter I generally like NPR as well in the car on the way home. Marketplace is good stuff.

Edward George Ruddy died today! Edward George Ruddy was the Chairman of the Board of the Union Broadcasting Systems, and he died at eleven o'clock this morning of a heart condition, and woe is us! We're in a lot of trouble!
