(CNN) -- At least two people have been shot and several injured at Northern Illinois University outside Chicago, CNN affiliates are reporting.

The gunman who opened fire in a lecture hall is dead, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

The lecture hall is Cole Hall, reports say. The shooting occured shortly after 3 p.m. ET.

The University has ordered its student body to seek shelter and canceled classes Thursday.

"Its has been confirmed that there has been a shooting on campus and several people have been taken away by ambulance," the school said in a posting on its DeKalb campus Web site. "All classes are canceled on the DeKalb campus. People are urged not to come to campus."

DeKalb is 65 miles west of downtown Chicago and 45 minutes southeast of Rockford.

We're not the only country that has school shootings (we do have most of them and I am in favor of stricter gun controls).

They are reporting another incident from Dec. 10th that may or may not be related - racial comments were written on a bathroom wall. Due to this, Finals were canceled at that time.
Now this.
17 people were taken to the hospital, three are in "code red", serious condition.

Tighter gun controls help stop school shootings. Moreover, the less civilians with guns, the less people will commit gun crimes.

This never would have happened if everyone at the school was packing heat.

I'm more concerned with why these people feel compelled to shoot their classmates, but I guess talking about guns doesn't hurt.

I go to NIU. It's been a very fucked up day. I have a good friend that got shot, but will be ok. This is fucked up. You dont think this shit will happen at your campus.

They haven't said anything about that... they're still trying to figure things out.

No matter how you look at it...guns are in America and they aren't going anywhere. Tighter gun control laws will do very little to stop gun violence. Individuals who decide to commit gun crimes are not going to be the individuals who obey gun laws. The majority of people committing these crimes don't possess the guns legally in the first place. Beefing up gun control legislation will do very little to deter someone from buying a gun illegally and using it to kill. I would argue that making guns harder to get will just lead to an even bigger underground gun market than what already exists.

I'm not trying to attack your opinion and I am by no means a gun advocate, I think they are terrible...but the half ass gun control legislation that may result from these school shootings will not do a damn thing to cut down on gun violence. The less guns legally available to civilians will not prevent tragedies like what happened at NIU today. I almost guarantee that this insecure little fuck planned and plotted this crime for some time...tighter gun controls or not...the crime still would have happened.

Because you're equating sheer numbers with propensities to commit gun crimes.
