I'm pretty sure they've done this with dogs, as well. On a number of occasions not just linked to Olympic "clean up".
Yep, they've been getting rid of dogs for awhile now. I have some former neighbors (whose daughters my sister is best friends with) who moved to Beijing a couple years ago, and they tell me that getting rid of stray animals isn't the only thing they're doing to prepare for the olympics. Basically, they're doing the equivalent of sweeping everything under the rug so that it looks nice when the guests get there, and nobody can see the glaring problems. Pollution is a big one, I believe they're already instituting forced driving quotas, and they're definitely going to shut down all the coal plants so nobody sees what a mess it really is there (winter in Beijing apparentely makes L.A. look pristine). They've also apparently enlisted some scientists to work on cloud seeding to ensure that it doesn't rain during the olympics.
