"IS GEORGE BUSH THE WORST PRESIDENT -- EVER?"

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ucrr/20051203/c ... NlYwM5NjQ-

I would venture to say yes. In my opinion, he is. A rather interesting article by the way.

what's even more pathetic than his actions in office are the American people who voted him in for a second term.

Andrew Jackson was the worst, followed by W.

Do you mean Andrew Johnson?

I'd say Andrew Johnson or Herbert Hoover were the worst. Jimmy Carter was pretty aweful too..so was Ford for that matter. The 70s was a bad decade.

Lucky #13.

...and he brought the 1st bath tub into the White House so all subsequent Presidents can thank him for that.

I would say the party that lost to him is much more pathetic.

No, I mean Jackson. He went out of his way to exterminate as many Indians as he could, defying the Supreme Court in the process, he purposely demolished the National Bank, he created a system of cronyism and nepotism (the so-called "spoils system") that lasted for decades before a professional bureaucracy was implemented, etc, etc. Just a horrible president.

I know we've done this discussion before, but it might have been lost, or on the old board.

Either way, let's keep it civil, and back up your opinions.

Thank you.

i know its been said a thousand times and has become pretty cliche, but he certainly is the Hitler of the US. at least Jefferson had a plan to educate and adopt them into American culture.

W is nowhere near being the worst presidents, for reasons that others have mentioned (Jackson, etc). I think there are a few others that have been worse too, but I'd have to do some research.

What are your reasons for thinking W is the worst? Is it the war? In that case, why wouldn't LBJ be worse, with the Vietnam war and all?

or if you were to go that way, you could even include JFK, i suppose, considering he also heightened 'Nam.

LBJ's legacy is too mixed for me to think him the worst president. Vietnam was one of the worst mistakes this country has ever made, but LBJ himself was largely responsible for pushing through the most widespread civil rights reforms in this nation's history. If you look at his domestic successes, you could see him as one of the most effective presidents we've ever had.

Keep in mind my viewpoint is that of a War Veteran who is not quite clear of the military yet(until next week).

Why I think Bush is the worst president, well, here are some good reasons. Not sure if any of you read the article.
Quote:
He has taken the country into an unwinnable war and alienated friend and foe alike in the process;

He is bankrupting the country with a combination of aggressive military spending and reduced taxation of the rich;

***He has deliberately and dangerously attacked separation of church and state;***

He has repeatedly "misled," to use a kind word, the American people on affairs domestic and foreign;

He has proved to be incompetent in affairs domestic (New Orleans) and foreign ( Iraq and the battle against al-Qaida);

He has sacrificed American employment (including the toleration of pension and benefit elimination) to increase overall productivity;

***He is ignorantly hostile to science and technological progress;***

He has tolerated or ignored one of the republic's oldest problems, corporate cheating in supplying the military in wartime.

The two I have bracketed with *** are the most important to me. As for lasting effects, remember when all is said and done he will have put 2-3 members of the Supreme Court in thier place, including the Chief Justice. For the record, I approve of the new Chief Justice. Still, his stark christian beliefs which spill over onto the government are my gravest concern.

Also, his refusal to deal with the world oil supply problem in a positive way could have graver implications than imaginable, in my opinion. I believe a crisis on the magnitude of the Great Depression is foreseeable because of oil and the stance Bush and his family/friends/etc have promoted. This ties in with the whole science and technological process thing.

I will testify against myself however in that I know little of presidential history past 1900ish. LBJ would not even skim close to a worst president list I would compile though. Vietnam was historically a disaster but there were so many factors dealing with it back then it is hard to just put a pure blame for it on the shoulders of one man, even the President. And although the reasons for starting the Vietnam War ended up being bad reasons and it was a huge mistake, as far as I know it was honest. It was an honest mistake, if a huge one. Iraq was not a mistake. It was a war began on false grounds knowingly and willingly. I won't go any more into Iraq. Same goes for JFK.
