do any of you give? i'm talking to the poor, to charities, to the world wildlife fund, kids in haiti, troops in iraq, etc. i really don't have much or any money but i'd like to start making small donations to something worthwhile. can't you help support a child in a third-world country for pennies a day?

My family has supported a family in Peru through a ministry at our church. It's actually quite rewarding. Aside from giving money, we send them boxes of things that they need, birthday presents and whatnot. We write letters back and forth to each other (translated by the Church in Peru). Even pictures. It's horrible how poor this village is, but it's also very exciting to see how much we can change their lives.
Another charity i'm involved with is Food For the Poor, Inc. Forbes magazine voted it as one of the top 50 international charities. They calculate how much money donated actually ends up going to the cause. Food For the Poor has an amazing 4% overhead. 96% of everything that gets donated actually ends up in the hands of the needy.

Habitat for Humanity is a great one, too.

i don't have much time, either, with grad school and a job. i'd rather be a little below comfort in money then start stretching myself to thin and have it effect my job and schooling.

How is supporting a child in a third-world country "worthwhile"? I'd just like to hear the thinking behind this. Perhaps something along the lines of "all life is precious and anything that prevents suffering is necessarily good"?

I give to things like animal shelters and environmental groups. Not very often and not very much, because I don't exactly have a lot of money to give. I'd really like to get more involved in some environmental projects though. Maybe during a summer I can volunteer or something. Planting trees, it doesn't get much better than that.

i thought about volunteering at a local animal shelter, but my dad said with no experience i'd likely just be cleaning piss and shit out of cages.
