Louisiana Lawmakers Consider Castration for Sex Offenders

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,348171,00.html

BATON ROUGE, La. — Castration could be a sentencing option for some sex offenders in Louisiana under a bill approved by a state Senate judiciary committee.

The bill by Senator Nick Gautreaux, an Abbeville Democrat, requires a judge to order treatment for certain second-offense sex criminals with a specific drug designed to diminish male sexual urges — if a medical expert agrees that the treatment would be effective.

An offender who doesn't want the treatment could opt for physical castration. Gautreaux says some offenders may indeed want castration in hopes of avoiding the drug's side effects or permanently ending the sexual urges that led to their crimes. His bill goes next to the full Senate.

Castration doesn't work in all cases. Many sex offenders have a psychological reason for their activities, not a biological one.

Does this allow them to avoid jail and remain in the public?

I'm not sure i'm comfortable with that. I would have to see statistics on how well this actually works. I find it hard to believe that either of these methods would completely suppress pathological sexual urges.

maybe the chemical castration addresses these issues...?

Their brain is still intact though, even if their balls aren't. That's the problem.

Did anyone see Little Children?

However, surely it affects testosterone levels...

Yeah, it would definitely affect testosterone levels, which would definitely affect aggression, somewhat. But i don't think that is the only contributing factor. That would be way to easy.

Some sex offenders don't even use their genitalia in their crimes. It's possible to assault someone sexually without even getting personal sexual gratification from it. Hell, there are even women sex offenders.

Exactly. A serial fondler isn't going to be stopped by castration. Like you said, it's not that easy.

Looks like we're all in agreement here- castration isn't enough, clearly they should die.

Of course, we're all thinking of how this would effect people like Genarlow Wilson as well, right? One of the plea deals he was offered was a shortened sentence if he registered as a sex offender, a deal I'm sure many in his situation would take.

Yeah, that's unfortunate. The category "sex offender" is entirely too broad.

I would have taken it as a plea if i was him. I sure as hell wouldn't have been sacrificing up my nuts, though.

See, I'm not game for any change in sex offender punishment while the term is tossed around so loosely.

Me, neither.

But the whole thing is pretty far out, really. Lobbing off body parts or changing people body chemistry? It's all a little to Orwellian for me.

Just lock em up away from people...and i'm not talking about horny 17 year olds having sex with their 15 year old girlfriends.

More than anything, those people need psychological support.

Here here.

I've been saying for a long time that rape should be a capital crime (particular pedophilia), as I have also in the recent thread I started here in this section.

Yup, this is no better than when muslims stone a woman to death.
