A helicopter and heat-seeking equipment will be used today in the search for a lion on the loose near Maniwaki.
The lion, originally from Africa, escaped from a private property in the Kitigan Zibi reserve, about 200 kilometres northwest of Montreal, sometime Tuesday.
The reserve is next to Maniwaki.
The 2-year-old lion weighs about 150 pounds and is described as being domesticated. It was last seen at around 9:30 p.m. just south of Maniwaki on Highway 105.
"We have no idea where it came from," said Police Chief Gordon McGregor, of the Kitigan Zibi police department. He added that when the lion was report as being loose it was the first ever heard of it being on the reserve.
"This surprised the hell out of me."
McGregor said the animal is believed to have escaped, either from a chain or its pen, late Tuesday night.
"I've seen a lot of stuff in my world but this takes the cake," he said.
The Sûreté du Québec was called in to help in the search this morning.
Officers will use a helicopter and heat-seeking equipment to help wildlife officers track the animal on the ground.
"We have also advised all the schools and the daycares in the area," said Sûreté du Québec Constable Melanie Larouche. "We don't want to scare the public.
"According to its owner it is used to humans but we don't want to take a chance. We are asking people to stay clear of the lion if they see it."
If anyone spots the lion they are asked to call 310-4141 immediately.
just the fact that some guy in a Québec indian reserve owns a lion as a pet blows my mind. i hope they find it and send it back where it belongs.

A New York man mauled by his pet tiger has failed in his bid to sue the city for entering his flat without a warrant. Antoine Yates was jailed after being arrested in 2003 when police found the 200kg (32st) creature, named Ming, and a two metre (6ft) alligator, Al, in the tiny fifth-floor flat.
Mr Yates claimed that when he returned to his home, cash, jewellery and a pet rabbit were missing. Judge Sidney Stein said it had been an emergency situation: "The whereabouts of the rabbit have not been ascertained, but there is no indication in the record that Al the alligator was questioned in that regard."
