Anyone sponsor a child with World Vision or like organization? If so, do you correspond with your sponsored child?

I just started sponsoring a child. I don't particularly care if I ever hear from the kid and feel no compunction to write. I sort of feel bad about this. Is it enough to just financially help out or am I expected to write?
