Toronto man brutally tortured for months by wife and her boyfriend

A Toronto woman and her boyfriend have pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, sexual assault and other charges in relation to a vicious series of attacks on the woman's husband over a period of three months.

TORONTO — When police discovered the man, he was a bloody, beaten shell, a patchwork of old wounds blended into new — and still he hesitated to reveal his tormentors.

"I don't want to get them in trouble," he said pitifully, after officers found him huddled in a cramped bedroom closet, naked, shaking and covered in sores.

It was the final scene in one of Toronto's most vicious crimes, one that remained hidden from public view until the two accused — the victim's wife and her new boyfriend — pleaded guilty in a downtown courthouse this week to a host of charges, from aggravated assault and sexual assault to confinement and failing to provide the necessities of life.

The pair, whose names cannot be revealed after a publication ban was placed over any information that could identify the victim, will be scheduled for sentencing in the coming months.

When the man was finally rescued from the apartment all three shared in northwest Toronto, he had lost about 50 pounds and had two collapsed lungs, facial bone damage and five fractured ribs. His body was a maze of burns, bruises and razor marks; his ear cartilage had necrotized, and pus and plasma seeped from his skull. Doctors found remnants of thread on parts of his body, where his wife's boyfriend had attempted to seal his wounds with a sewing needle and thread.

The three-month campaign of physical and psychological torture began in October 2009, but the roots can be traced back to the previous winter, when the victim first met his chief tormentor at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and invited the man into his home to share chips and pop on New Year's Eve.

According to an agreed statement of facts presented in court, the victim and his wife had been drifting apart, and she swiftly struck up a relationship with the new man. He moved into the couple's Abbotsford, B.C., home and gradually took over their finances, receiving their disability cheques and determining the allocation of household expenditures.

When the boyfriend suggested all three move to Toronto for a fresh start, the victim agreed, in large part because he had witnessed the other man's explosive temper and was concerned about his pregnant wife. She and the other man were expecting a boy.

"(The victim) became entirely dependant on (the two accused) for the oversight of his shelter, food and health," notes the agreed statement of facts.

Before long, the boyfriend began drinking again, leading to the victim's first severe beating in their new Toronto apartment around Halloween 2009.

As the months passed, the victim said things went from "worse" to "really bad." The assaults became constant. He was beaten with broom handles and a hammer until they broke. He was sliced with razor blades and stomped with steel-toed boots. The boyfriend said he was "sick and tired of beating (him) all the time, so he was thinking of other ways to hurt (him)."

And he did: He poured lighter fluid all over the victim's body and set him on fire, mostly in the bathtub, because it would not burn.

"Stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about," the boyfriend would say when the victim reacted in pain.

The boyfriend, whom the Crown is aiming to label a dangerous offender, also used needle-nose pliers to pull cartilage from the victim's ears. He used the same pliers to hold the head of the victim's penis, stretch it, and place straight pins through the scrotum and penis. A series of straight pins placed through the victim's lips kept him from opening his mouth.

When the victim bled extensively, the boyfriend heated a knife on the stove until it was red hot and tried to cauterize the wounds, or stitched them shut with a sewing needle and thread. When the victim's body became puffy and swollen from the repeated beatings, the boyfriend used a tool to puncture the skin so that blood and fluid poured out. The victim used his own clothing to mop up the blood.

The victim, who was frequently confined to a 5-foot-by-2-foot closet where he slept on a thin sheet, was also forced to write out a list of household rules. In childish scrawl replete with spelling errors, he wrote such phrases as "do something to keep myself happy by not getting hit"and "stop making things hard when it's easy."

For the most part, the victim's wife simply watched and said nothing, other than to occasionally yell at the victim to stop screaming. Her boyfriend threatened the victim that if he told anyone what was going on or sought outside help, similar tortures would be visited upon the victim's elderly parents.

Neighbours noticed the victim's poor condition, but the accused explained away his cuts and bruises by saying he was a troublemaker who got into fights. The end finally, mercifully, came after the accused invited one neighbour into their home and introduced her to the victim.

"Out of the closet appeared a human being, standing wrapped in a towel from the waist down," notes the agreed statement of facts. "(The neighbour) described that the male was so injured she could not ascertain his race . . . his head appeared 8 times larger than a normal head, his eyes were swollen shut and he was purple, red and black. (She) indicated that she had only seen individuals in such a condition in scary movies."

Days later, neighbours contacted police.

Well life in prison is about the worst he can get, since there's no death sentence in Canada.

Its not enough. The victim will proprably never get over what happened to him.
I really hope that motherfucker get rapped by a Big black guy, and become the prisioners bitch... Then it will be a start.
