Starbucks 'wastes 23million litres of water every DAY by forcing staff to leave taps running'

Starbucks was today accused of wasting millions of litres of water a day after its policy of leaving taps running was revealed.

Staff at the worldwide coffee chain are banned from turning off a cold tap behind the counter at every one of its 10,000 branches.

Bosses claim the constant flow of water stops germs breeding in the taps. It means the shops waste about 23.4million litres of water a day.

In Britain, where there are 698 Starbucks branches, 1.6million litres are squandered each day alone.

Every branch has a cold tap behind the counter where employees can wash spoons and other utensils in a 'dipper well'.
Starbucks' tap policy came to light after a couple wrote to complain after spotting a tap left running at their local branch.

Lisa Woolfe, 39, of Cuffley, Hertfordshire told The Sun: 'I noticed a small sink behind the counter had its tap running. The assistant said the store was told to keep its tap running because it cleaned the pipes.
'I could not believe it but when we contacted head office, they confirmed that the taps were left on and the water was not recycled.
'It is an absolutely astonishing waste of water, especially for a company which prides itself on its green credentials.'
Peter Robinson, of environmental charity Waste Watch, said: 'Leaving taps running all day is a shocking waste of precious water.'

But Starbucks insisted leaving taps running is the most environmentally friendly way to clean its spoons, which are mostly covered in milk residue.
A spokeswoman said: 'We would welcome the opportunity to discuss ways to improve the policy with anyone who believes there is a way of doing that.'

Not many Starbucks here in CT. I'm very happy about that. Not because of any environmental reason, but because the coffee at Dunkin Donuts is so superior. There are literally 6 Dunkin Donuts within 3 miles of my house.

Maybe not in Cleveland, if you don't mind drinking polluted Cuyahoga water.

There's a great documentary The Return of the Cuyahoga River that's worth checking out if you can see it anywhere.

Our nice weather is just beginning now. If you lived here for the last 4 months, you wouldn't think it so nice.

If you turn out to be wrong are you willing to agree to stop drinking first?

I'm fairly amazed, considering this is getting them large amounts of outrage everywhere from New York to England to Bahrain, that they haven't even bothered to issue a statement about it.

You're amazed that a huge corporation is ignoring a major environmental issue in hopes that it fades from the media quickly?

true
but yeah; i don't know if there's any real way(or precedent for that matter) to legislate against it, and we all know most starbucks customers are pussies who won't follow through on their ideals and boycott if it gets in the way of their frappuccino.
but it's possible i'm wrong about them. one can only hope.
