In a speech today, McCain referred to Obama's tax plans as Socialism, and then in the same speech turned around and trumpeted his desire to have gov't come in and buy up the home mortgages of those trapped by high interest rates and falling housing values. Uh, hey John? Yeah, how the fuck is gov't buying up mortgages not a form of socialism?
*edit - anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I may be off base, but me thinks McCain is talking out of both sides of his mouth here.

And McCain wonders why he has problems with the base...

I think he's agreeing with you. That's one thing that's really frustrated me about McCain as well. He just doesn't "get it" on a few things that are really core to conservatives. On the other hand, he's definitely looking better then the other choice despite his shortcomings.

I think socialism will happen whether we like it or not. The question is how far will they go and still convince the American people that they are in the land of the free?

I thought the same thing. You're right on target, imo.

"The National Security State uses FASCISM to protect CAPITALISM by claiming to protect DEMOCRACY from COMMUNISM."
Just substitute Republican Party, Freedom, and Socialism for National Security State, Democracy, and Communism, and welcome to 2008.

You've got a good point there. And I agree with the gist of what's been said above as well. No matter which way we head, I think we're fucked ultimately.

This pervading mindset is the exact reason why, essentially, with a few blurred edges, we will never truly be fucked.
