The Austin School Board voted last night to begin the termination process for Mrs. Hoover. Officials say she should not have appeared topless on-line. She has been on paid leave since May 19th...and this morning on her My-Space account, she defends the pictures as art and not pornography.
That evil empire known as the religious right has struck again. I can't stand the prude ass American's with their antiquated views on sex. This story has been all over the place the last few days and it's being spun to sound that Ms. Hoover was in some sort of porn shoot. I managed to track down the abovementioned photos and what I found is the farthest thing from porn.
Despite the fact her name is Ms. Hoover, this isn't some stud asking the teacher how he can get some extra credit after class. These pictures are done by what looks like a professional photographer and have artistic value. Further these pictures were taken during her free time and have nothing to do with her ability to effectively teach a high school art class. I know the argument will be made that the existence of these photos is a distraction to the student body, preventing her from teaching her class effectively. This however is complete bullshit as I'm sure the kids are just as distracted, if not more, when a young teacher wears a skirt or low cut top.
As not to get all legal on your asses, I won't even get into how this is a blatant violation of her 1st amendment rights.
Yeah, I'm sorry, folks, let's let the kids wait until their adults to appreciate nude artwork. Especially if their teacher is the model.

there's no way she would win a lawsuit on 1st amendment grounds. i mean, you can complain that she should able to do something like this if its artistic, but she simply can't believe that she would do this, the school would find out, and everything would be ok

apparently she did not show them to the class, but another teacher did. That's what one of the replys on that web site said.
I have no problem with an art teacher doing a slide-show or something on tastefully done nudes, although I can't see many high school students being truly edified by it because they are just kids and more likely to simply giggle through the whole thing.
However, if she did show photos of herself that's not a very smart thing to do. It opens up a can of worms that she had to know would get her into trouble. Right or wrong she had to know this wasn't smart, if she was the one that showed them.

while i tend to agree with you, she still should have known better. i mean, if she's trying to make some kind of statement by getting fired for this, i guess i can understand that, but really, it's gonna take more than that to make the grand, societal change that makes something like this acceptable
