Wikipedia Editing for Zionists

http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/0 ... ?ref=world

Quote:
This week in Jerusalem, two Israeli groups hoping to smite their online enemies, both domestic and foreign, began a course in the “Zionist editing” of Wikipedia entries.

At the opening seminar, attended by about 80 activists, one of the organizers, Naftali Bennett, said that the aim of the course is to make sure that information in the online encyclopedia reflects the worldview of Zionist groups. For example, he said, “if someone searches [for] ‘the Gaza flotilla,’ we want to be there; to influence what is written there, how it’s written and to ensure that it is balanced and Zionist in nature.”

Mr. Bennet is the director of the Yesha Council, which represents Israeli settlers living in the occupied West Bank. Another of the course’s organizers, Ayelet Shaked of the My Israel movement, told Arutz Sheva, an Israeli news organization based in the West Bank, that the use of the word “occupied” in Wikipedia entries discussing Palestinian territory conquered by Israel in 1967 was just the kind of problem she hoped a new team of editors could help fix.
Ms. Shaked told The Guardian that the new editors were needed for entries related to Israel since, “People in the U.S. and Europe never hear about Israel’s side, with all the correct arguments and explanations.”

One of the participants in the seminar, Miriam Schwab, said, “I’ve personally tried to edit things in Wikipedia that were against Israel, small things, and my changes were erased or undone and I didn’t understand why.”

She added, “In general, it’s so important for us to be online working to defend ourselves and to prove to the world and to ourselves that we are just and we are right.”

The editors are expected to work on Wikipedia entries in both Hebrew and English since, as the Israeli newspaper Haaretz noted, “For years now, Wikipedia has been a fierce battleground between the Israeli right and left.” In a report on the editing course, the newspaper explained:

The organizers’ aim was twofold: to affect Israeli public opinion by having people who share their ideological viewpoint take part in writing and editing for the Hebrew version, and to write in English so Israel’s image can be bolstered abroad.

The Yesha Council also announced a prize for the “Best Zionist Editor” — the person who over the next four years incorporates the most “Zionist” changes in the encyclopedia. That lucky encyclopedist will receive a trip in a hot-air balloon over Israel.

Ramallah – PNN – The Israeli group Breaking the Silence released a new set of photos showing Israeli soldiers abusing Palestinian civilians and damaging property during daily invasions of West Banmk communities.

A soldier dances while a Palestinian women stands next to him The photos come three weeks after Breaking the Silence released a video from December 2007 showing a group of soldiers dancing around a bound and blindfolded Palestinian female detainee.

According to Breaking the Silence founder Yahiya Sha’ul, the new photos are from the 2008 Cast Lead operation in the Gaza Strip. Cast Lead began on December 27, 2008. During the 23-day operation, 1,500 Palestinians were killed and 5,600 wounded. Fourteen Israelis were wounded and three civilians killed.

According to the group's web site, "Breaking the Silence is an organization of veteran combatants who served in the Israeli military during the Second Intifada and have taken it upon themselves to expose the Israeli public to the routine situations of everyday life in the Occupied Territories. The organization endeavors to stimulate public debate about the price paid for a reality in which young soldiers face a civilian population on a daily basis, and are engaged in the control of that population’s everyday life."

What besides the remark that got her fired leads you to believe she hates Jews?

I'm not sure if I buy that Israel is as large of a third rail as she claims.

Do you really need anything more than that remark?

I tend to assume someone hates Jews till they prove otherwise.

Nesenoff: Any comments on Israel? We're asking everybody today, any comments on Israel?

Thomas: Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine.

Nesenoff: Ooh. Any better comments on Israel?

Thomas: Hahaha. Remember, these people are occupied and it's their land. It's not German, it's not Poland...

Nesenoff: So where should they go, what should they do?

Thomas: They can go home.

Nesenoff: Where's the home?

Thomas: Poland, Germany...

Nesenoff: So you're saying the Jews go back to Poland and Germany?

Thomas: And America and everywhere else. Why push people out of there who have lived there for centuries? See?

Nesenoff: Are you familiar with the history of that region?

Thomas: Very much. I'm of Arab background.

Nesenoff: I see. Do you speak Arabic?

Thomas: Very little. We were too busy Americanizing our parents... All the best to you.[55]

Really?

Isn't there a better way of expressing how much you hate Jews than by expressing how much you hate Jews?

At the end of the day, it's still an ad hominem distraction. Is it fair to use your hatred of liberals as a reason to ignore your protests over liberal policies?

No. Not at all. But I wouldn't use my ad hominem attacks on liberals as a foundation to formulate arguments against them. They stand on their own. If Helen wanted to raise legitimate arguments, or arouse protest over Israel there are much more mature routes to take. If a conservative without any sort of xenophobic record came out and said that blacks should get out of the suburbs, or that Hispanics needed to get out of the southwest and respect the people that have lived there for decades, would you reserve your judgments in the same manner?

There are a few things that are very telling about it. First, it was recorded off the record. We don't know a whole lot about Helen Thomas because her whole life has existed on the record. It was a keen insight into her feelings. The biggest thing to me though, is how she disregards the history of the Jewish race and reserves Palestine for the Arab populations. She asserts that Jewish people have no right to live upon that land, even though it is their homeland. As opposed to identifying atrocities or Israeli policies that she disagrees with, she immediately jumps to conspiratorial theories and accosting the Jewish race to leave Palestine and return to places that have traditionally been hostile to them. It's the exclusivity of her position on Palestine that bothers me the most. Anyone who believes that a certain piece of land doesn't belong to a certain group of people is explicitly xenophobic and bigoted in my book. It's prejudicial to the core, and racist.
