Is the USA united on anything these days?

Poll: Nation split on Bush as uniter or divider
The fact that the nation is divided on whether or not they are divided is the most salient point.
This nation has always been divided people. No one has ever won every single vote. Is it that hard to understand? The nation will always be divided. If some elected offical gets 200 million votes and the oppnent gets only one vote. It's still a divided nation. It's highly unlikely that any one will ever get the entire vote.
Look down the line of history for preseidents. Bush, Clinton, Reagan, Kennedy, etc., etc., etc. No of them ever got the entire vote. The nation was divided then, just as it is now.

Yeah, but it's not usually a 50/50 division like it is now. Check this link to see the results of past elections.

I think the point is that a large number of one 50% HATES everything about the other 50%. That is not unique, but much more unusual. I don't think there was much hatred going on in 1988.

Estranged I think you are completely missing it. Sure you can look at this in a broad sense and take a very simplistic view of division, but whats the point if you cannot actually deduce anything meaningful from that perspective?
When the our society is divided on issues at nearly 50% we lack a valid majority. The United States government should function by majority rule with consideration given to minority rights. When a majority is not present progress is difficult, and consideration is not given to minority rights because no one can reasonably ascertain just what constitutes the minority.

This is, by no means, unorthodox. If people think it's bad now, they should have been around in the late 1790's/early 1800's. The nation was even more bitterly divided -- which extended to our leaders. Hell, they were killing their opponents back then. The amount of vitriol in the American body politic at that time dwarfs that of today.

True, but the nation was barely formed at that point and democracy in general was still a tough go.
I don't think we can fairly compare the two time periods.

Absolutely . . . and that somewhat proves my point. Back then, you had a nation in its infancy flirting with an experiment called democracy. The issues facing the nation were large, but not as diverse. With that you would expect a certain level of cooperation. Today, you have more diverse groups with selfish interests in mind when they vote. Because of the diversity of people as well as issues, you are bound to create more of a divide when it comes to larger issues that shape the political landscape.

I understand your point. Thanks for the clarification.
