DENDERMONDE, Belgium - A man armed with a knife and wearing face paint went on the rampage at a Belgian daycare on Friday, killing two children and an adult, officials said.

About 10 children were wounded, some seriously, in the attack in the small town of Dendermonde near Brussels, prosecutor Christian Du Four said as anxious parents gathered to identify the victims and injured.

The man, who had his face painted black and white, rang the doorbell at the The Country of Fables day-care centre at around 10 a.m. When staff opened the door he barged in and ran amok.

The suspect, aged about 30, escaped on a bicycle but was soon detained nearby.

"The guy just went crazy," Theo Janssens, the Dendermonde deputy mayor for social matters said. Three adults were injured as they tried to get between the attacker and the children, he told AFP.

"There was blood everywhere, it was unbelievable, real carnage."

Janssens, tears in his eyes, said: "He went straight for the babies and attacked them."

"The smallest ones were in their beds, they were probably asleep."

He said three of the injured had suffered life-threatening wounds.

One child and one adult died at the scene while a second child later died from the wounds. Around 18 children were in the daycare at the time, officials said.

Parents of the children were gathered together in the town hall and, with psychologists in support, were identifying the victims using photographs.

Du Four told reporters that the suspect, aged about 30, entered the building by saying that "he had a question he needed to ask somebody."

"He quickly pulled out a knife and started using it on the children," the prosecutor added.

"He then went up to another floor and started doing the same thing again," he said. The man's face was smeared with white his eyes were blackened, the prosecutor said.

Six women members of staff tried to put themselves between the attacker and the children. All were injured, some with knife wounds to the legs or shoulders.

The suspect quickly fled was picked up by police a few kilometres away, officials said.

"He didn't panic, yes, he was calm," a man who lived next to the daycare told RTL-TVI television, describing the suspect as extremely thin and tall.

A woman at the day-care centre said that the man, whom various media reported may have been a psychiatric patient in the area, was not known to staff.

"We are horrified by the events. Our thoughts go out to the families and staff of the daycare. Many parents are in a state of shock," Interior Minister Guido De Padt told the press conference.

Do you know of any small neighborhood daycares that have their own private, armed security staff on site suitable to stop a psych patient with a knife?

I think the biggest problem is that they opened the door with children there to someone who obviously appeared unstable.

You don't need a private, armed security staff on site. I'm assuming that they can afford windows to see who's at the door before just opening it.

A Belgium town is gripped by grief and shock after a knife-wielding man with his face painted black and white went on a stabbing rampage Friday that left two infants and an adult dead and at least 10 injured.

The suspect in custody is a 20-year-old Belgian national who was not intoxicated during the crime, prosecutor Christian Du Four told a press conference.

"He is a 20-year-old Belgian, not of foreign origin," Du Four said. "He did not escape from a psychiatric institution. He was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs," he said, denying several rumours circulating after the attack.

Du Four added that the suspect, whose identify he refused to reveal, "has not said anything on the facts (of the crime)."

"There is enough incriminating evidence to bring him before the investigative magistrate and get an arrest warrant. "The weapon was found. It is a large knife," he said, adding that it was around 30 centimetres (12 inches) long.

A man talked his way into the daycare and then immediately started attacking the children.

"The guy just went crazy," Dendermonde deputy mayor Theo Janssens said at a news conference. "There was blood everywhere. It was unbelievable, real carnage."

There appeared to be heroism as well as horror at the bloody scene - three adults who attempted to get between the infants and their deranged attacker were among the injured.

Three of the hospitalized children suffered life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Police had the grim task of taking digital photographs of the children in hospital and then showing them to parents in order to identify them.

Belgium Interior Minister Guido de Padt, who was at the crime scene, said he was "horrified" by what he saw.

"Our thoughts go out to the families and staff," he said. "Many parents are in a state shock."

Television footage at the daycare showed one official holding a child wrapped in a white blanket. Two women, appearing to be in their late 30s, had faces etched with shock and disbelief.

Dendermonde is a mostly Flemish-speaking town of about 43,000 and about 35 kilometres northwest of Brussels.

Officials said a man came to the door of the nursery, called "Storyland," saying he needed some information. As soon as they opened the door, the mayhem began.

The man's face was smeared with white colouring, while his eyes were blackened, according to the prosecutor.

He fled on a bicycle but was later arrested at a supermarket and is in custody.

Nursery staff said they didn't recognize him.

"It's just a sad day here," Damien Vernon, a 43-year-old originally from Ireland, told the BBC. "We're a small town and the crime figures are low here, we're just in shock."
