It's really quite sad when people start thinking this is a big deal. Cuz it's not, it's NOT.
I agree. If you want to be treated equally, you have to be willing to be the butt of a joke or two. Everyone is. Blacks, whites, gays, short people, fat people, etc. Part of being accepted is being able to take and make a joke from time to time. Give them their dignity by treating them honestly, like everyone else, like they want.
That site is amazing. It's like a McParadigm story to the nth degree.
Entry #77:Tard gets sassy:
This morning, as all the kids were unpacking their things, I notice the old new kid was just sitting there, doing nothing. I said to him, "You need to unpack your backpack."
His response to me - "You need to unpack your butt."

I work for a non-profit that provides group homes for adults with intellectual disabilities. If you notice, this is the same term the story used (see Thodoks, I read it). Less than a year ago the PC term was adults with developmental disabilities, before that; developmentally disabled adults. And before that; I can't even remember. My point is that the PC term keeps changing and people will continue to find away to make fun of them with or without the R-word. My question is this: what do they want to be called? From my experience, the only adults with intellectual disabilities who take offense to the term retard are the ones who have been trained to do so. Anyone ever see Ralphie May's bit about being "tard happy"? They are some of the happiest people in the world, why give them something to be upset about. It is true that after working with them, I do refrain from using the r-word but I think we are making too big a deal of it.

Am I the only one that thinks there is a difference between calling someone a retard and calling someone retarded? I generally don't have a problem saying "that kid is retarded" if he's got Downs or something, but I wouldn't say "that kid is a retard". Maybe it's just me.

Agreed.
I'd never say anything about a person's condition in front of them anyway (PC or not), it just seems rude, but to refer to someone as retarded when speaking of them is clinical, however non-PC.
The term "retard" should be reserved for stupid people with IQ's OVER 70.

Sarah Palin is Calling for Rahm Emanuel to be Axed for Using the Word "Retarded" Feb. 3, 2010
President Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, is at the center of a controversy over a comment he made last August. In a meeting on political strategy, Emanuel called some liberal activists "f--ing retarded" for proposing attack ads against Democratic lawmakers opposed to health-care reform.
The word that's put Emanuel in hot water isn't the expletive -- it's the "R-word." In a post on Facebook, Sarah Palin, whose son Trig has Down syndrome, said Emanuel's language was a "slur on all God's children with cognitive and developmental disabilities." Palin is calling on President Obama to remove Emanuel from his position.
The Special Olympics said last night that Emanuel will meet with members of the disabilities-rights community on Wednesday afternoon to discuss his comment.
Our question to you today: Sarah Palin is calling for Rahm Emanuel to be axed for using the word "retarded." What do you think?

C'mon! Mentally disabled has six TIMES as many syllables as tard. I can't be expected to say all that just so people don't think I'm a dick!
