Nice article. I'm curious if one solution could be to have the owners rent out the house until they sell it. That's what my cousin did with her old house here after moving out of town.
As for health insurance, it's just another example of how stupid it is to tie it to employment benefits.

yup.

So what happens to home prices when hyper-inflation hits?
I tend to think home prices will lag behind a little bit. I'm thinking commodities, basic materials, etc. skyrocket while home prices gradually increase (possibly at a rate below CPI). But this is really just a wild guess on my part.
Yeah I have no idea how to even begin to try and guess what the effect will be.

It really depends on your definition of hyperinflation. Will we see 50% month-over-month inflation? Not likely. Severe devaluation? Well, that's what the Fed has been trying to do. I think you're insane if you don't think CPI will skyrocket within a few years.

i rent. i've never NOT rented. i enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing that problems with my place are someone else's, and that it gets fixed on their dime. i invest the difference b/w what i pay in rent and what i would pay on a mortgage and come out ahead. but i'm also not married and don't have children. i'll probably be returning to grad school in a year or two and don't want the headache that selling a home brings. i don't have strong feelings about this one way or the other, but for me, renting is the best way to go.
i dunno. just thought it might be an interesting topic.

buy a house you pussy
Yeah, I've pretty much decided that I'll never finance a home purchase. And I'll wait until prices fall another 20% before I take the plunge. No sense in buying an overpriced asset.

when did you buy your house, john?
soon
do you rent an apartment or house now?
a house, friend.
what are the windows like?
transparent, it's almost like they're not even there
I'll be generous and put the home price at 200K, to make the math easy and divide everything by five. If I divide all his numbers by five (I know, might not be wholly accurate, but it's too late at night for me to do all the math), I get an expenditure of $5,200 per year for renting versus $8,300 for buying. Still more, of course, but the $3,100 difference can be certainly understandable if the person wants to spend that much more to own.
Anyone who's taking out a $750k loan that doesn't have a huge salary needs to have their head checked. That's why I thought it was a poor example, even if his logic is fairly sound.
