2. Increase mental illness reporting. After the horrible shooting at Virginia Tech, the state changed the structure of reporting mentally ill patients to the gun registry, including those who seek outpatient mental health services instead of just those who have been committed. Just four years out from when the law was passed, the number of mentally ill people who are blocked from obtaining a firearm in Virginia doubled. Other states haven’t been so vigilant. In fact, many states are incredibly slow to report even those mentally ill people who check in for inpatient services.
What constitutes mental illness? PTSD? Something in the autism spectrum? ADHD? Better yet, what constitutes good enough mental health to own an AR-15? (Neurodiversity/Human Biodiversity is about as third rail in American politics and social policy as we can get.)
Rather than requiring passive reporting, why not use active? Make a psych evaluation a requirement before purchasing a gun and there will be less gray area to deal with.

So, if I go I'm experiencing some PTSD from a death in the family, or some traumatic incident I saw and seek help, I can no longer get a gun in Virginia? Awesome.
In your particular case, I'd be more concerned about the VA reporting you as mentally unfit. They have streamlined the process and send that information straight to the DOJ.

To be fair, this would pretty easy to do if you didn't have time to proof the page. There are a bunch of pagination programs where you never actually see ads. And the ad could have been booked days/weeks in advance. The copy editor/designer could have just seen a number. Still, I would guess someone got fired.
