For years, cigarette smokers have paid a whopping "sin tax" each time they buy a pack of coffin nails.
never heard that term before

Carbohydrates are the most essentian nutrient, the primary energy source of the body, that is why we like stuff with plenty of it. Of course technology in food production allowed us to have plenty, but it isnt a poison at all.

anyway, the example used there of the movie theater pop is not the one causing most people offense... that stuff's already overpriced, everyone knows, and no one would really notice the increase; but the problem is normal 12 pack home consumption. one of my problems is that it works against the poor but even more than that, i don't like the judgment passing inherent in the passage of the law; "obesity"; yes, it contributes to obesity, if used unwisely. so can fried chicken; so can milk; so can bread; so can pretty much anything if eaten in excess of calories burned.

even if they drank equal amounts it would affect them more than rich people, obviously.
yea. that's not equal protection under the law.

all for any kind of tax like this. I don't smoke, I don't drink pop at all, but tax them all you want. I drink a lot of beer, and Ontario already taxes beer and liqueur a good amount, which has its good and its bad. (beer costs more here, but 95% of bottles and cans get recycled or something. maybe thats similar other places who knows.)
anyways, the argument that poor people drink more pop so this hurts them more is completely ridiculous for me. They may or may not, and if they are they probably shouldn't. So anyways, totally in favour of most "sin" taxes. sin tax weed and most other drugs and i'm happy.
depends on your view of things, for myself pop is useless unhealthy and disgusting. same could be said for other substances i guess, just depends on your view.
