Good thread. I've long pondered the difficulties of dealing with sovereignty when it comes to tackling deforestation.
Actually it's quite simple. As a country and individuals resolve to not by any product made from rainforest/amazon wood.
Even if 98% of the world made that resolve, all it would take is the 2% that is in control over that land to say otherwise to make a huge difference.
So what. We believe in the sovereignty of nations. If the Gore or Obama cared so much they could become President, raze New York City and plant trees. Or they could spend their millions buying and protecting these forests.
Then the 98% of the people resolve to not do any business with the 2%. People have the power even if they're scared to use it.

I don't really disagree with the sentiment of the methods you're suggesting (though if we're razing cities for environmental benefit, NYC would be one of the last ones you'd want to destroy), but I'm skeptical about the practicality. It's tough to deny that for some people who live closest to the land, it has more potential to better their lives if they turn it into a bland cattle pasture. Even if the 98% I made up earlier disapproved of that action, the landowner only needs a very small group of customers to sustain himself.
Of course, I don't really have an answer for this problem--maybe psychobain, Human Bass, and our other Brazilians can give us a better idea on what's going on down there.

I've posted that link like 17 times or something in here and the 'fuge combined. I know I explicitly showed it to other New Yorkers, but I guess I never did so for you.

I used New York City not because it's not green but to have the cost in dollars and lives be big. Telling some people to not log the rainforest is basically giving them a license to die or live in poverty. Their are lives behind the stupid shit being spewed. Real current lives and not future potential life and lifestyles.
If I live in Brazil and my choice is to be dirt fucking poor or log the rainforest, then I'm yelling "timber" with a big smile on my face. That some idiot from the US or other country whines that I'm destroying the earth, the same earth they've fucked over for centuries, well it's really not going to bother me. You don't want me to log then buy me off. Payment expected every two weeks just like the company check I get for logging. If you're not willing to pay for what you want then please shut up. You want me to care about you and your precious environment then you better be willing to care for me and my family.
