So as you may or may not know, in 2029 scientists have calculated that that 900 ft. asteroid will be 18,000 miles away from earth's orbit and has the force of over 20,000 Hiroshima bombs.

But you never know, in 10 years they could say, "Oh! We miss calculated by 18,000 miles" and then we're all fucked. Anyway, here's to one of you bright young gents finding a way of stopping this beast in the future.

And maybe this board and this thread will be around in 19 years and we can say our farewells.

I'm really worried.

Not.

Quote:
Apophis is a near-Earth asteroid that caused a brief period of concern in December 2004 because initial observations indicated a small probability (up to 2.7%) that it would strike the Earth in 2029. Additional observations provided improved predictions that eliminated the possibility of an impact on Earth or the Moon in 2029. However, a possibility remains that during the 2029 close encounter with Earth, Apophis will pass through a gravitational keyhole, a precise region in space no more than about 600 meters across, that would set up a future impact on April 13, 2036. This possibility kept the asteroid at Level 1 on the Torino impact hazard scale until August 2006. It broke the record for the highest level on the Torino Scale, being, for only a short time, a level 4, before it was lowered.

Additional observations of the trajectory of Apophis revealed the keyhole will likely be missed and on August 5, 2006 Apophis was lowered to a Level 0 on the Torino Scale. As of October 7, 2009, the impact probability for April 13, 2036, is calculated as 1 in 250,000. An additional impact date in 2037 was also identified; the impact probability for that encounter is calculated as 1 in 12.3 million.

Yeah I was gonna post Ceebs quote...

Although there is most certainly an asteroid with our name on it somewhere in space right now...this one is not worrying scientists. Worst case scenario for this particular asteroid, it would not be an extinction event...but it sure would suck for some of us

I'm not scared. If Hollywood can destroy an asteroid, so can we.

I will say this: If it does just pass close to us like it's suppose to, it will be very fucking cool to see...that is, if we haven't all killed ourselves by that point.

Funny fact: Russia is starting up a project to try and deflect this asteroid (it's more about learning how to do this in case it actually happens down the line)...if you check to see the projected impact zone for this asteroid, the place most likely affected: Russia

Back in the early 1900s Siberia got reamed by an asteroid that broke up. So I can see why Russia would be all over this.

On an unrelated subject: Meteorites (small chunks of asteroid) are really cool. Especially if they contain olivine. (High quality olivine is a faceting rough known as Peridot).

Here's a slab of meteorite with nice specimen in it.

Quote:
The meteorites that contain iron-nickel crystals are fascinating in their possible origins and diversity. It is postulated that another planet similar to Earth (a rocky planet) broke apart early in the formation of the solar system and is responsible for the iron-nickel debris that rains down upon the Earth on a daily basis. Since it is known that the Earth has a substantial amount of elemental iron and nickel in its core, this leads credence to this theory and gives us much to think about. Many, however, believe the meteor debris to be left over primordial material that the Earth and the other planets were built from.

^ this idea here is more scary than an asteroid slamming into the earth. The idea that a planet can break apart and go hurtling into space.

It seems rather obvious that the asteroid belt is the remains of a rocky planet.

Who knows? Could just be the "dust" leftover from the formation of a solar system.

Or we miscalculated by 18,000 miles and it is twice as far away.

My favorite part was when C_B said he was worried. At this point, I too became concerned about the well being of our planet. The fear grew in my stomach i read through the beginning stages of his post. Mr. Rational Dr. Ceebs was worried, the extent of his worry, i was hoping, would reveal itself as i continued through his post. After a short pause to regain my breathe after the initial shock at his reaction, i decided to move on and get the facts that brought upon this worry.

needless to say, my mind was set at ease instantly when i read the next word... simply put... "Not." this humourous misdirection has become somewhat of an inspiration for me in all my lifes endevours.
